A multiple entry visa allows the holder to use the visa to request entry into that country on multiple occasions.  The visa is valid to the day it expires, which is marked on the visa itself.  It is much more convenient and generally less costly to get a multiple entry visa instead of re-applying for a new, single entry visa each time you want to visit the country.  Note that it is not always your choice what type of visa you receive - that is up to the discretion of the issuing office.
