Formal (for business)

Sono setsu wa oai dekinaku te moushiwake arimasen deshita

(I have no excuse for not being able to meet you the last time)

moushiwake arimasen deshita is the most formal form of apology...usually used in business towards clients  

mousu       is the old term for "to say"  which isnt used anymore

wake         is reason or excuse..(circumstance)

arimasen   is "dont have"

deshita      is the past tense of desu

Dochira ni otomari desu ka?

(Where are you spending the night)

this phrase can also mean where are you planning to spend the night

(tomaru is to stop but it also means to live, to spend the night, )

Dono you na oshigoto shite imasuka?

what field of work are you in  (its impolite or in bad taste to ask outright what the person does for a living and what position he holds in his company)

Shumi wa arimasu ka?

Do you have any hobbies

Hobbies are a good topic to talk about, almost every Japanese I meet asks me that. a good  ice breaker.
