Is "being a good swimmer" a prerequisite to be a good surfer? I consider myself an above average swimmer.

  1. maybe just read up on the basics on the net and if your a pretty good swimmer its most likely you will be able to pick it up quite fast out there- but be prepared to be dunked a few times!

    best of luck bro

  2. Take a lesson or go out with a buddy who knows what he/she is doing.

I've been surfing for 30 years and I will tell you that it's not as easy to pick up as a lot of other sports. There are so many intangibles that only come with experience and rules that no amount of trying can teach you.

Do a one or two day lesson to get the basics and then just go out as often as you can.

    Have fun and be safe.

  3. If you live close to a beach, I would recommend to take lessons from anyone in the area that recommends them. But if you don't want to spend the money, buy a cheap board and go to the beach and just practice. Ask other surfers to help you. Don't be shy, I'm sure they'll help. I would!
