  1. a sail boat

  2. You've been told a bunch of c**p! Plenty of sturdy Sailboats under 30 ft can and HAVE done this crossing. A Contessa 26 is one that comes to mind. You can generally buy one of those with a trailer for under 15K.  Yes, you need some basic knowledge of sailing and first aid and the like for your survival.  Google Tania Abei...she did it in a Contessa at 18yrs of age. Around the world that is.....Pearson Triton 28 is another good one...a Folkboat...Alberg 29 and 30...some of these can be had on ebay for $1,500. ...h**l, even a Kayak with an outrigger and a mast and tarp will do it.

You are only limited by the bad advice and resulting fear you are given. Some people will never accomplish anything great in life. Good Luck.

  3. An Ocean going boat - if you want to sail you need a yacht big enough for the ocean,  not just any sailboat.

  4. I'm with Dave M on this one ...  being a Dave M myself ...Maybe great minds think alike ...

My 38' boat has been to Hawaii and back in total comfort and safety. I have friends who have single-handed there and back on 24' and 27' boats as well as 50' boats. Check out the cruising sites online .. Lynn and Larry Pardy have cruised the world in a variety of smaller boats.

    and many others ..

A well-found boat and a prepared skipper and crew have the best chance of making a successful crossing.

Take sailing courses through ASA or a local sailing instruction program .. practice practice practice ... go to seminars at the spring boat shows, pick the brains of those of us who have done crossings ... choose your boat wisely ...become one with your boat and know how she will react in many conditions.

    Bon Voyage - Fair Winds

and most important --- GOPHERIT !!!!

  5. I would recomend a yacht, cost about $60,000 for a small one.

  6. sail boat

  7. a sailboat?

  8. not a sailboat in this world will be able to do it alone invest in yourself learn as much as you can untill you learn how much you don't know or controll and then Good luck John...

  9. Before you run off and buy a boat to cross the ocean, you need some experience in boating.  Buy a small boat and travel around the bay and learn how to handle a boat.  Learn navigation and safety.  Learn CPR and First Aid.  Learn how to swim and how to react in a dangerous situation.  Learn everything.  Get a Captains license and Coast Gurard Certifications.  Buy at least a 65 Foot boat if you intend to cross the Pacific Ocean  to Japan.  The ocean is a very unforgiving environment.  One mistake could cost your life and the lives of your crew.  Take heed.  Good Luck in you venture.  Plan on doing it in say 5 years. You will need that experience to venture out into the ocean.

  10. How about someone else's boat?  If you want to learn to sail, then crew for someone who's making the passage.  In fact, crew on any boat that will take you, whenever you can. You'll learn a lot, and it's a lot safer and cheaper than buying, outfitting, and maintaining your own boat.

Dave M is right. Once you know enough as a sailor, the kind of boat you'll need won't even be a question.
