  1. Erick K has it right, the type of wood you use isn't nearly as important as the finish you put on it, i have two tops, one a vanity, made out of radiata  pine that have been in use for 25years and are still going strong. Just make sure you use a waterproof, hard wearing finish.

  2. sounds bad when i say this but...whatever kind you want! really as long as you use a good polyurethane it'll stand up just as well. if you have other furniture in the room you plan on having it in then stick with the same species.

  3. I would stay away from oak if it is going to get wet at all since it's a fairly open grain wood.  Teak is one of the best if it's going to get wet at all and it's very durable.  Ash is a good hard wood that has a nice grain and it's quite durable.  Yellow pine can be a bit more difficult to work with.  You'll want to stay away from white pine, ceder and redwood since they'll scratch and dent fairly easily.  Birch is a little soft for counter tops.  If you're wanting a darker finish Apple wood and Cherry can both finish very nicely.

  4. For the top I would use formica.  It is water proof and comes in any color or pattern you want.  For the side walls I would use birch veneer plywood.  It can be cut to any size you need and can be stained or painted.  It has a much better surface finish than regular pine plywood.

  5. definely pine, its soft and cheaper or go thrift shopping for a nice piece to paint yourself
