  1. any beach county is $$$

look to the interior - like Polk county

prices 1/3 to 1/4 what it takes to live in a 'water' county

Near Lakeland - you can go the Gulf and the Ocean in 2 hours

or so - and when (not if) hurricanes hit - they lose their punch

by the time they get there (mostly- but not all)

    all the best

  2. Depends what you like. For the pay, then Miami is probably highest pay, but highest in crime. Stay away from certain parts of St. Pete, Tampa, Orlando, and Daytona, as well as much of Ft. Pierce and Jacksonville. Avoid small towns like Belle Glades and Holopaw (full of methamphetamine, and dirty...). If you want to be near the beach, you can still get a reasonablly priced place in Clearwater, and even cheaper if you go slightly north of there, to Pasco County, but Clearwater Beach is pretty nice and Honeymoon Island is the best beach over there. Sarasota is $$$, so is Venice. Palm Beach is very pricey. Avoid Ocala, Gainesville, Tallahassee if you want to be near the beach. Pensacola has beautiful beaches but I think it is kind of dead around there. Cocoa Beach is still pretty decent and there are jobs available in the nearby Melbourne area, plus it isn't far from Orlando theme parks. Also still not gone all the way downhill is Pompano Beach. Its pretty lively there and jobs are available. Avoid Orlando. It is only good if you want to work for Disney. It's always hot, and everything is expensive (apartments are pretty cheaply priced though). There are some nice areas of Orlando, but I would take Clearwater, Cocoa, and Pompano before Orlando. Its humid inland. If you want the beach, reasonable prices, low crime, look near Clearwater, especially Dunedin. Thats a great little town with a beautiful beach. Also Pasco county is still pretty darn cheap and about 40 minute drive to Clearwater beaches. You also get the nightlife of Tampa and St. Pete nearby, and it's about 1.5 hours to Orlando theme parks. Tampa also has Bush Gardens. Good luck.

  3. I live in Sarasota, and it's pretty expensive, but not much crime, and real close to the beach.  Bradenton has more crime, and is only slightly cheaper (Forget Palmetto:  expensive housing, high crime, no jobs).  Not much crime in Venice, and rent is "reasonable", no jobs though.  I've been to Clearwater and Largo, rent was cheap, and excellent vicinity to the beach and a few jobs, not sure about crime.  My bro. visited a friend of his in Ft Myers, and they're staying in a house twice the size of mine, for the same rent (likely a broke investor trying not to lose his shirt)  Not that many jobs, hot club scene, and according to city-data.com, not much crime.

Like a previous poster said, look inland, but Lakeland - Winterhaven have gotten expensive lately.  North Port is loaded with cheap housing, little crime (not many jobs) and good proximity to Sarasota and Ft Myers (about 40 mi. from either).
