I'd like to start a volleyball team at my school! Any suggestions?

So my school doesn't have a volleyball team,

and I'm in love with the sport.

Me and a few of my friends are set on the idea of starting a team.

We've asked around and know a lot of girls that would be interested in it.

The only problem is, I have no idea where to begin.

I'd like to get an actual team at my school, but it that didn't work, I'd be happy to start a team of my own just for fun.

But how much money would I need?

What do I do first?

Your help is greatly appreaciated :]

  1. i started the dance team at my school- and it has been a major success. we have been around for two years now, and have won many awards- anyway... talk to the principal. if you have an athletic program, talk to the coaches about some oppurtunities for girls, then hit the books. research will get you where you need to go. once you have all the facts, everyone will take you a lot more seriously. good luck :)

  2. i personally think you should allow guys on your team. i know a lot of my friends that are guys who love to play volleyball

  3. ask ur athletic didrector if u could start a team at school if u have all the girls that wanna play sign a sheet of paper im sure he'd be all for it but u r going to have to wait for the next school volleyball season to start in october next year hope i helped

  4. In order to start a varsity sport, you are going to need a few schools in your conference to start girl's volleyball at the same time too, if they don't already. If your athletic conference already has girl's volleyball, this might be much easier.

Parents will often be the ones that campaign for this. If you get a list of at least 10 sets of parents to approach the AD, then you might see some action from school administration. It would help if at least one parent volunteered to coach through the first year in order to save the district money.

In the meantime, what you could do is ask that your school start intramural volleyball. That is coed, or women's, or boys. Start by asking your gym teachers about this since they will already have nets and such from phys ed curriculum. If there are a few teams of kids that like the sport, a small competitive league could begin. Once it is demonstrated that this league has the numbers interested, the administration may sit up and notice.

Until then, get your friends involved in club volleyball. Have a parents sign up to start a club. (You can find information on it here: http://www.usavolleyball.org) All you need is one team and one coach and you can get money from parents to join a few tournaments. That is a start and quite a good one too. You can also look to USA Volleyball (USAV) for coaches at your school. There are always coaches looking to find varsity work, especially in a beginning program that they can call their own.

I'm impressed that you are looking to start an initiative to get girl's volleyball on the map at your school. This takes hard work, and lots of losses in a beginning program, but you are the reason why high school volleyball is growing as a sport in this country. I wish you the best of luck.

  5. First look for a coach at your school willing to sponsor the team or even a parent to volunteer. Ask the ath. director and see if it's a lot of money to start a team could you do a fund raiser. Make sure the girls you have are willing to play and that the coach knows what they are doing. If the answer is yes get the ath. director to scheldule league matches and tournaments  and make an argument about title 9 which is for girls to have a playing right as much for any other sport, or gender. Don't take No for an answer if it's for a dumb reason. Fight for what you love.
