I'll be in Rome for a year. During that time I would like to visit Venice. Any advice on how to go about that?

Okay, I have been to Italy before...Rome, Florence, and Assisi. I would really like to visit all of Italy but I am on a strict budget. So I chose Venice to travel to while I'm in Rome for a year. Any ideas on how much a trip to Venice would cost (be there for about a week maybe)? I am very low maintenance, but would like to visit all the museums and sights. I'm thinking I would probably stay in a youth hostel. Any idea on the conditions of the hostels in Venice? Are they nice for a hostel?

Also, what are the best times of the year to go? What would be the best way to get me there (i.e. train, bus...)? And any other general advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Either by train or by a tour bus.

  2. Ciao,

nice to talk with you, please check the ryanair website, it is a low cost airplane company, I went to venice last year with then , you arrive at Treviso airport and then 30/40 minutes ( it depends on the traffic jam) you are in Venice using the bus. A return ticket costed me 50 euro.

Spring is the best period, let's say April.

    Ciao and buon viaggio

  3. Hop on the night train and you'll get there in the morning.

The trains are very reasonable and fun in Italy.

There is a hostel, but it isn't on the mainland. Just don't going during the peak tourist season or it'll be too crowded.

  4. I'd suggest you go in late March/ early April (but not exactly over Easter). Try a guesthouse (casa di accoglienza) of a religious congregation (nuns). They are sometimes as cheap as hostels and offer better conditions.Good luck!

  5. I personally believe that 2-3 days will be enough to visit rather deeply both Venice and surrounding area (islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello).

I've no idea about hostels but unless you want go over there the first days you'll be in Italy I guess you'll have more than a single opportunity to get detailed infos from people that have stayed in any of Venice's hostels

The best time to go there is during May-June (late spring) or in Sept.-Oct. (early fall)

No discussions on the best way to get you there.

Take a train (ES = Eurostar -You'll need to book seat and ticket in advance) - The cost of the ticket is abt. 100 Euro ( 2nd class- standard fare - there and back) This is the link for yr immediate checking

  6. I took the train from Florence to Venice before. There are cheaper hotels then the hostels, so get a good guide book. The hostel was okay, but why do that if you can get  hotel room?

Venice was my fav. I've been there twice before. I'm jealous!

  7. I went to the Central Hotel. I think it was nice and cheaper than the hotel on the island a lot. I took a bus to go to the island for  12 mins by the bus number 7. If you can go there around feb. 14 -21there is a nice time to go and see the  Venice Carnival....

Ryanairs what the first said is the best i think :)

  8. When we were in Venice, we stayed at a really cute youth hostel with dorm style rooms and stuff. We also purchased Rick Steves "Italy" travel book and he gave us a lot of tips on places to go, how to travel, eat etc-and for the most part, they were inexpensive. If you're going to to Italy for a year, it would be a wise investment to buy this book and I gave you another link for another helpful youth hostel sight.

  9. better to travel by train...but check on frequent strikes...consult the site www. trenitalia.it for schedule and prices.save if you are a student... sleeping in venice can be very very expensive...i suggest you stop in the city of Mestre (5 minutes by train or bus from venice) and save some money... best time is spring or winter... as other options near venice for sleeping and saving check Treviso (20 minutes by train).. venice can be seen in three days if you are a good walker.. wear very conf shoes...if you take the vaporetto (the water bus) it is going to cost you 5 euros.

do not miss the Ducal Palace, the Saint mark's square and basilica, and the rialto bridge.
