  1. You dun need to know how to order chicken rice in Malay. This is a local Chinese dish.

  2. I like chicken rice, but not really the Hainanese chicken rice. I'm a Hokkien, not a Hainanese.

  3. i agree with Low. You don't really need to know Malay or Mandarin to buy chicken rice. It might be better to just use English so that they don't mistakenly give you something you did not order.

But if you really want to show sincerity by using the local tongue, just say thank you in mandarin or malay. which is "xie xie" in mandarin and "terima kasih" in malay.

"hello" and "good bye" are perfectly acceptable greetings in Singapore.

  4. This might helps:

    -Chiken Rice = Nasi ayam hainan (Nah-see ah-yum high-none)

-How are you =Knee-How (Chinese), Apa kabar (Malay=ah-puh car-bar)

    -good bye = sampai jumpa (some-pie jump-puh)

    -Thank you = Xie-xie (Chinese), terimakasih (Malay=duh-ree muh-kah-see)

    -I don't understand=wo pu che to (Chinese), tidak mengerti (Malay=tea-duck muh-kerr-tea)

    Have fun
