I'll be staying at a Fragrance Hotel in Geylang Area for vacation with my fiance...

I know its the red light district of Singapore but what exactly is wrong with this area? From what I've seen and heard, Singapore is a really safe and clean country. So apart from seeing 'working girls' (just ignore them, right?), I really don't understand why everyone is advising against Geylang. Can someone advise me on this?

  1. Geylang is known for its working girls, and the hotel chain you've chosen also has a reputation of being coveniently available by the hour, but if you've no problem with this, then no worries!

The other thing you also need to know is that this area of town sells a fruit called durian.  There's an entire street of stalls that run seemingly endlessly... If you're not used to it, durian smells bad.  Really really bad.  So bad I'm getting queasy just thinking about it.  Not sure how far your hotel is from these stalls, but if you've a sensitive nose then I suggest you try to avoid that street.

  2. people will think you as pimp and your fiancee as hooker.. so better avoid that place.. there are plenty of hotel 81 in other locations outside geylang.. try to stay in hotel 81 at bencoleen.. in that hotel also vice activities are taking place.. but not as worse as staying in the red light district..

geylang other well known things are durian fruit and frog porridge..

  3. It is fine if you are looking for prostitutes.

Since you think that it is 'fine', then just go ahead and stay there.

Try walking down the streets after 7pm.

There is a reason why people are against it.

Those who don't know why, it is because they have not walked around that area much. They only walked around the area where all those seafood eating places are (along the main road). They have not tried walking around the inner streets where the budget hotels are and the real shite can be seen.

Honestly and seriously, from one human being to another, there are other Fragrance Hotel outlets which are not in the red light district. Check out those other outlets first. I wouldn't even take my fiancee or girlfriend there.

  4. Well, Geylang is indeed the red light district in Singapore... it's a fact... BUT! other than that, it's quite a nice place with lots of delicious food and you can get to see the night scene going on there.

people tend to make the place seem complicated because of the fact that people see Geylang as a red light district rather than a place where people can go late night supper and chill out with friends.

it's part of singapore and it has a part to contribute to singapore's culture and history. there ain't nothing wrong with the place actually. singapore is really safe and clean :)

    hope you enjoy your stay!

  5. There is nothing wrong with that area. It is just that the flesh trade there is kinda legalised so many people are aware of that place. It is a good place to stay if you are interested in getting a feel of what Singapore's night life is like.

Just be safe. Don't 'stare' or 'argue' with anyone as they do have some form of 'protectionist group' there. Also, don't be alarmed if you are mistakenly taken for a 'call girl'. Just don't get upset.

Enjoy your stay and welcome to Singapore!

  6. because that's the place where most prostitutes are found and guys go there to 'play' and the wife's at home is unhappy i mean who will be happy? the whole street there is full of those girls is kind of disturbing and how are you going to 'ignore' them?
