start walking away from where all the tourists are, when i went over there we got lost in the allies and found the best food i have ever had.  I would say go where the locals go, it will be cheaper and you will not be annoyed with tons of people walking by all the time

Cheap eats then your best bet is to go to the Billa or to the COOP supermarkets. They sell fresh bread, cold cuts, wines & beers, some even sell prepared foods (baked chicken, trays of lasagna and other deli delights). There are several Billa's and COOP's in Venice so all you have to do is ask around.

By-the-by... I love going to supermerkets and food markets... and I honestly beleive that it's a wonderful way to get an insight of the country (and its culture) your are visiting. It's intresting to see where other's shop and what they shop for.
