Question:

I'll be vacationing in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose area, golfing as a single, will I be able to get on?

I've been all over the US and this hasn't been a problem anywhere else but I figured I'd ask. Courses usually shy away from booking singles but usually as a single I can walk up and get on. Do courses get packed the first week of April in SF? Should I worry about how busy the courses are? I'd like to do a round every morning while I'm there, is morning golf difficult with the weather (fog, moisture, etc.). Any course recommendations are appreciated also.

  1. The first thing to remember is that you are restricted to public courses that allow non-members to play. some private ones will allow you to play if you show them your membership from your home course as a guest. getting on as a single should not be a problem but depending on the day and time you may have to wait. you can call ahead and book as a single too. there are numerous courses all along the coast and the same tips would apply to all.  The early morning is chilly and damp and the greens are slow due to moisture, fog is often present if you are right on the water. they have a type of grass there that intertwines and when your ball lands there it gets stuck. There are excellent course around Monteray that I have played and recommend highly.  Pacific Grove, Spyglass, Laguna Seca, and The Delmonte Hyatt.

  2. As soon the rain stops it gets pretty busy right away. However, I have a few spots that might interest you that are near where you are at. See links below. Some might be a bit too pricy though.

http://www.delaveagagolf.com/ (you'll love this one, my kids really love this place)

http://www.pajarovalleygolf.com/ (this one is okay, but very wide, too muddy during rainy season)

http://www.pebblebeach.com/ (aww, breathaking! this is way too expensive but a lot of famous people meet here)

Eagle putt!  need a partner for the second round? LOL!

  3. april is a tough time to play morning golf in the bay area...

Getting on the courses arent that difficult its the fog and all the moisture in the air...

There are a few good courses in the san jose area but cant think of the names off top of my head...

  4. You shouldn't have a problem but it doesn't hurt to call.  In San Francisco the two courses are Harding Park and Lincoln Park.

Harding recently was rebuilt and is expensive but it hosts some pro tournaments.  Lincoln is short but very interesting but in bad condition.

Pasatiempo down by San Jose (more like Santa Cruz) is the best public access course in the bay area.  Its an Alister Mackenzie course that is very classic, amazing greens.

In Oakland, Metropolitan is a muni by the Oakland Airport.  Its a links course, very good back nine.

Half Moon Bay is just OK.
