I have been writing a book for the past 3-4 years. It's fictional and fantasy type of book, and I take it to be a very good book so far. Yet, when I try to ask people to read it, they think a 16 year old can not write anything good... What should I do? Should I lie about my age? How can i find people to read my book? It is typed and free to read all they need to do is email me... should I stop writing since everyone is looking down on me? I have 16 chapters done and even though it isn't complete I still want to find readers to tell me where I am at, where I am going, and how it is going...

  1. 3-4 years is a lot of preparation. Even if you're just 16 years old, I admire your motivation and drive to write more. I'm 15 and I, too, am an aspiring writer. Though I write for the joy of writing, I don't really expect my writing to be recognized or praised for anything. I know what I'm worth, and others don't. Anyway, if you will, can I read your story? I've been trying really hard to find something new to read, and I don't really expect anything great - no offense.

It would be really awesome if you could email me it:]

  2. Okay - I believe age is irrelevant. I took a community college class for creative writing and, believe it or not, there was a thirteen year-old girl in there who was... amazing. She cranked out the best stories in the whole class.

People that judge by age are... they're not worth your time. If you have an English teacher - or any teacher, for that matter - whose opinion you really trust, give them a chapter. Just ask for their input. Same goes for any friends who write and who you respect and trust. Try going to your school's newspaper and giving out a few first chapters to them.

If you want to lie about your age, go ahead. I do. (xD) But remember to keep your head up - if people don't like your writing, well... that's how things go sometimes. Don't be insulted - you still have a lot of time to clean up your writing and make it a lot better.

And never, ever, stop writing. Ever. If it's your passion and you love it - no matter what it is in life - don't quit. Don't ever quit what you love just because other's don't believe in you. Someday you'll publish a book and those people will be proved wrong.

If you want any advice on your writing or anything, feel free to message me and I'll give you my email so that we can talk or I can read some of your stuff.

  3. Do not stop writing for anyone! I'm actually younger than you & I'm writing a book as well. And I know it's a good book far, regardless of my age. I'm sure yours is also. My opinion, keep writing and don't lie about your age. Whoever refuses to read your book because of your age is ignorant. If you get one person to read it, and they enjoy it, they will inform others, thus spreading the word. I can't give advice about publishers and all that, because I haven't come across that stage either, and I don't want to give you any false information. What I can say (and I really hope you acknowledge this!) is do not stop writing for anyone! Do what you love and love what you do.

    Best of luck!

  4. Just write. Don't worry about what people say. Don't lie about your age. You don't even have to tell your age. Personally, I wouldn't give it to people on the internet. Too many potential stealers. I would get a group together at your school or find a group in your community that you can share your work in and read others. I know when I edit/read others' writings, I do it with the truth. I don't say 'very good!' and leave it at that. I do it as if it were my job. Perhaps you can find someone like that that you know, or ask a teacher.

Just whatever you do, don't give up. Just know that fantasy stories (especially in another world) take a lot of personal research for each city, each custom, each race, each and every thing you make up needs to have research behind it to make it seem real.

  5. just because you're young, doesn't mean that you don't have the potential to become a great writer. to unlock your potential, however, you just have to keep writing and keep reading (for a writer is only just a step beyond a reader), regardless of all those naysayers who say you can't.

and for your information, just because YOU take it to be a very good book doesn't mean that it isn't faultless. ask your parents, friends, teachers, etc. to read it and ask for honest, useful suggestions.

you seem to be dedicated. i wouldn't give this up now! keep chugging on and who knows, you might even be on the shelves one day.

    good luck!

  6. Never give up kid. You are sixteen. That's great. You can do it. Those Aragon books with the dragons was written by a 14 year old. And the bird king was written by a 12 year old girl.

Never give  up you can do it. I think you need a support group. I'll cheer for you. YOU CAN DO IT> go go go.

Best friends, or web people may love to read it. Be careful some people may be tempted to steal it. But        submit it to lot and lots of editors. Don't be afraid of rejection like 50 times even twilight was rejected over 50 times. Just keep trying.

NEVER Give up...if you can dream it you can do it. So you do it kid. Good luck.

  7. Tell them that S.E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was fifteen.

  8. Hey, I'm fifteen and I've been writing since I was twelve, I know that it's hard but you should keep on because who knows better what teens what then teens???? Seriously don't give up I've had about....thirty rejections and I still haven't given up
