I'm 13 and I used to wear glasses but I stopped and now I want contacts but my mom says I'm too young. Now I'm beginning to see some kids my age wearing them so my mom took me to this store where they sell glasses and contacts and she asked the docter working there if it's ok and he said he doesn't recommend it to people under 18 because he says the eyesight didn't settle, it keeps changing. What could happen if I wear them? Is it like very bad to wear them now or just not recommended?

No rude comments please.

Thanks!

  1. I don't see why you couldn't wear the lenses.  I've been wearing contacts ever since I was ten.

  2. Just a couple of things to think about... if you wore your glasses, your mom would be more willing to invest in contacts. Don't take this wrong, but it also really depends on your maturity level... when I got contacts the doc asked my mom how my room looked....  using the theory that a kid who took care of their room would also take proper care of their eyes w/ contacts.

  3. cos your eyes are still growing. your eyesight could still change in power. who knows, maybe with good food for eyesight and proper care and all you may gain better eyesight and wouldnt need them lenses at all. give your eyes some chance. or only start wearing them when your 15 or so.

  4. I don't know what he is talking about, but your eyes are still growing and they need oxygen. Contacts reduce oxygen... even the best.

  5. It is true that your eyesight changes a lot before age 18. I got contacts without ever getting glasses at age 14. My contact prescription has changed a few times and the eye doctor just gives you a different pair of contacts.

  6. You can wear them.. I mean I'm 13 too and i'm getting my contacts next week. Your mom might think your not responsible enough so she might not think it's not the best idea. Talk to your parents how your more responsible now.And how its getting into like sports. And I personally think its better. Cause if your break or loose your glasses then thats like 1000$ just for glasses. But for contacts there like around $24.00. Go to http://www.jnjvision.com/teens.htm and it will tell you tips on how to talk to your parents about contacts. I talked to my mom and she was cool with it

  7. lol. i have no idea what would go wrong. i went to my eye doctro place to get new glasses last year(when I was 14) and he asked if I wanted contacts. lol. the thing is, whenever i tried them, it wouldn't stick to my eye, but my finger. LOL

  8. I have contacts and colored ones.My friends have them too. I don't what the problem with wearing them is.

  9. I think it's mainly  the responsibility of taking care of the contacts and keeping them sterile so your eye doesn't get infected that your mother and eye doctor are concerned about.  Think about it, you are putting something foreign in your eye.  If you damage your eye, it will be very painful and might NEVER be the same.  Any amount of bacteria that gets under that contact (No swimming with your contacts in)can cause SERIOUS damage, even resulting in you losing your eye.  (How pretty would you look dressed as a pirate for the rest of your life?)  My daughter went off to college and didn't take care of her contacts well enough, and sure enough, she got an ulcer in her cornea.   She said it hurt like crazy, like someone was sticking a needle in her eye!  She also had to wear dark glasses because the bacteria from the contact bore a hole through her cornea, so she had to deal with pain and extreme light sensitivity.  She had to put prescription drops in her eye for 4 months and see her ophthalmologist every week just to check on her eye to make sure the antibiotics were working. She couldn't wear contacts for a year after that.  So think seriously about this.  If you don't take REALLY good care of your contacts, it's like you're running with scissors.
