  1. I would start with ballet and branch out from their

  2. I would probably start with ballet. Its a great building block and you can do almost any kind of dance afterwards. Ballet has a lot of precise movements and strict positions (it was never one of my favorites) so if you don't want a class like that I would take Jazz. Jazz is a lot like ballet, but I think it's a little looser and you move your body more and more naturally and stuff. My personal favorite it tap - if you love fast paced dancing then take this!!

  3. Hey. Great that you're trying it! No matter what you decide to do, DON"T let it intimidate you and do what feels right. Ballet may be a bit daunting because, unless you've been training for years, it's going to be confusing. THere is a lot of terminology and often times it is hard to get your muscles conditioned to do the things that are necessary in ballet unless you've been training them since you were small.

With that said, according to your personality and likes/dislikes, I would offer the following points on the rest of these genres:

HIP-HOP - Easy to pick up and you don't need technical training, per se. If you aren't afraid to push your body in different ways and really let go to be "funky" you will get the general pop and lock and the motility of this kind of dance, which is very fun.

JAZZ - Is fun, but so many very rigid classical jazz teachers rely heavily on people with a ballet background. It's fun to try though!

TAP - If you start out slow, this can be a great genre to explore, especially if you are musically inclined at all. Rhythms are very cool, but if that is confusing, tap may not be for you. Some of the coolest tap dancers don't do anything that technically difficult. You just have  to really feel it out and keep your ankles "loose". Decent rhythm is a must though.

MODERN - This kind of dancing is great because you don't need to have turn out and a certain look all the time, as with ballet or classical jazz. It is very organic and free and many people find the act of modern dancing very therapeutic in addition to being physically rewarding.

I suppose after looking over my suggestions, the easiest genres to break into would be hip-hop or modern. Tap would be a close second if you had good rhythm. Jazz would be third and ballet would be last.

    Hope this helped.

  4. You should start out with jazz or hip-hop because they are fun and get you moving. Unlike ballet or tap, they are not too hard to learn. Go for it!

  5. you should start with ballet if you really want to become serious about dancing. ballet is in every other *(mostly) type of dance so it'd help you.

another option is jazz. jazz is really fun and upbeat for the most part, and it's not too hard to learn. again there's ballet in there so there's alot of leaps and jumps and turns. stretch alot if you take it!

tap is really hard to learn. i've been tapping for 9 years and i've seen new dancers try to take tap. that's something you have to start when you first start dance, and you have to really go level by level. it's not easy to pick up on. but if you're up for the challenge, go for it. because of your age you'll probably be put in a more advanced class.

    broadway jazz is so fun.

i don't know if you'd be able to take it because at my studio we are required to take a jazz class as well, but it's a blast and we usually use songs from musicals ( actually always.) it's not so much kicks and leaps/turns. so it's more on style.

hip hop, i don't know much about since i've never seriously taken it
