there are some school aged kids (kindergarten through 2nd grade). I'm in charge of them after I get to work from school. I need to come up with something for them to do for 1.5 hours. We're stuck in the living room and outside. any ideas? anything educational and also anything just fun. lately we've been playing word bingo and then going outside to wander around. but I'd actually like some things to do with them. any ideas? thanks. best answer gets 10 pts. provide a variety of things if possible.

  1. Hide and go seek

    Tag

Show them colors and ask them what color

    Animals sounds

    read a book

  2. Crafts- paint, draw

    Gifts- make a mothers/fathersday cards

    go to this site,

-ideals for when a kid in your group has a birthday.

-teaching them how to spell, learn colors, lots of games!

  3. what are your limitations?  can you make crafts with them?  because you can make really fun puppets out of wooden spoons (either draw on them with sharpie or use stuff like google-y eyes and yarn).  the head being, of course, the widest part of the spoon

stories and songs are also good, and clapping games.  using cooking cutters as either tracers or play-dough cutters is also pretty fun.  and if you're organized enough to put on a small , 5 min. max play, i really suggest that.  base it on a fairy tale, like little red riding hood, but make up some characters so everyone has an equal role.

  4. What about these things:

    simple baking like cookies

set up a scavenger hunt for them

    rock painting

    bubble painting

    I Spy with clouds

do a nature hike where they collect things along the way (pine cones, leaves, etc) and then make a collage out of items

    mini Olympics or field day

  5. For around $50 buy some sports/ outdoor equipment: kick balls, jump ropes, soccer ball, some baseball equipment, a few tennis balls and rackets, sidewalk chalk, etc.. Trust me... when you buy these, 1.5 hours won't nearly be enough time for the kids and the time will just fly.

For the indoors don't be afraid to share some of your things from home. At times I'd brought my keyboard and allowed the kids to play (with careful supervision, of course). Have times of show and tell; kids of that age love such things.

I Spy is a good game. There's a drawing game I like to play. Rules are very simple: 1) There is one person that tells one or everyone what to draw. Everyone else has to draw everything that person tells him/her to draw. 2) If you are the one that is drawing, you are not allowed to see what you're drawing. Essentially, you are drawing blindly. If the drawing looks weird, that's the whole point; if it doesn't look weird, the person drawing is peeking.

Wouldn't hurt to have P.E. indoors or outdoors. Heck, have the kids take turns to coach from day to day. Don't do anything too strenuous, of course. You could even have some "track and field." Dashes, relays, hurdles (jumping over fallen branches), shot put (with a tennis ball), etc..

    Just use your imagination.
