I'm 16 and going to help coach a 6th grade elementary school volleyball team. Does anyone have any fun drills?

i recently was injured and am no longer playing volleyball for my high school team. I was told that if i kept playing at the high school level, then i would eventually tear something that will require multiple surgeries. I made the most heartbreaking and toughest decision that i'd ever had to make - to not play anymore. So when i found out that the elementary school coach didn't have anyone to help him out, i was totally excited, but also nervous to be working with kids that are just becoming interested in volleyball. So could anyone help me out? i need some fun and skill-building drills, that are appropriate for 11-12 year olds. Some coaching advice would be greatly appreciated too. =]

  1. THESE DRILLS HELP WITH SERVING

REVENGE: you line them up one at a time how ever far behind the net you think they can serve and the first one who's ball makes it over the net runs to where the ball hit and sits down then soo lots of girls will be on the other side of the net, the ones that don't make it over or go out of bounds get back in line. when someone makes it over they try to hit someone over the net the person over the net they will catch it and run back into the line they started in

    another game like this:

    FISH:

devide them up into two teams (one on each side of the net)

one person on each team starts out laying on the floor stretching out like a star or fish, and when some one on the other side of the net hits the "fish" on the other team the person who hits the fish liks on to the fish's feet or arms eventually one team will be all spread out on the floor, that team wins!

hope this wasnt too comfusing and i hope you have a good time coaching!

  2. One challenge that every sports coach eventually must face is making practices fun. While repetitive drills are necessary for building skill and muscle memory, when players become accustomed to certain drills they are more inclined to turn their minds off and go through the motions. Instead, coaches must continually rotate drills and add fun and exciting new ones to their practice line up to keep players focused and sharp. Feel free to use one of the following fun volleyball drills at your next practice to break up the routine and challenge your players in new ways.

    Bingo Volleyball

For the first of these fun volleyball drills you will need a large sheet of white paper and a black marker. Begin by brainstorming a list of some of the crucial skills and moves that your players need help with such as perfect dig, block, spike, etc. Once you’ve come up with at least 25 draw a bingo card on the sheet of paper, filling each of the squares with one of the skills and post it next to the court.

Now divide your team into groups of six for scrimmage. The teams play against each other as if it were a regular match with one key difference: each time they successfully execute one of the aforementioned moves, they earn that spot on the bingo card. Players must call the move before the execute it to earn the spot on the card.

The goal is to make a line of 5, at which point all members of the team must yell “Bingo”. This game causes players to come up with a game plan that successfully incorporates the necessary moves to make a line of 5, which can often be radically different from their normal game plan.

    Hit the Deck!

When searching for fun volleyball drills remember that the emphasis does not always have to be on hitting the ball. Volleyball requires many other skills that are often less recognized, such as the ability to drop and hit the floor without fear or hesitation. The following drill, which we call “Hit the Deck”, will help your players overcome that hesitation.

Begin by having your players jog on the spot. Either at the sound of your whistle or when you yell the words “Hit the Deck”, all players must drop to the floor instantly. If you’d like to up the competitive spirit of the drill, you can enforce a rule where the last player to hit the floor is out.

    Building Defensive Toughness

The third of the fun volleyball drills I like to use to change up my practice routines is a simple variation on 2-on-6. For this drill, one team has 6 players and the other has only 2. To begin with, have the strongest players on your team as the outnumbered ones.

The 6-player team begins by serving the ball within two steps of a member of the 2-player team. The goal is not to try and humiliate the 2-player team; rather the goal is to have them get down and play defense. You’ll really begin to notice your players develop their defensive toughness after running the fun drill at a couple of your practices.

  3. we do this at our volleyball practice every day...so there are three people by the net with a ball and the rest of the people are in  a line in front of the first thrower(first person with the ball), the person in line has to bump/set the ball to the thrower and move onto the next thrower(its really fun.

  4. I remember playing this drill in 5th grade. I loved it!

    What you'll need.

    - court (and all the obivous stuff)

-mats or something to lay on the ground

    -treats

    How to play

    1. set up everything

2.put the  mats with the treats on top on the oppisite side of the court

3.have the kids line up on the side without the mats to serve

4.have them try to hit the target

5.if they hit the target they get a treat if no they keep trying

Also queen of the court is GREAT!

  5. Queen of the Court: (my favorite)

-the girls make three lines (don't have to be even)

-three girls on each side of the net (one girls from each line)

-the far side of the net (away from the lines) is where the "queens" stand.

-the six girls play, and which ever team wins (a single, quick round where the ball in tossed onto the court at random by the coach), goes to stand on the queen's side. The losers go to the end of the lines, and the next three girls in the front of the line, fill in the now empty half of the court.

  6. i actually have some experience in assistant coaching so hopefully i can help..

coaching 6th gradei think maybe drills to help with the basics is always a good start.

    1. footwork- in ths drill have the girls stand in windows & you in front facing them..have a ball in hand..what you do is have them in ready position arms out but not together..on their toes & LOW!..what you do is slap the ball & hold it out either left right forward or above your head..which ever way you hold the ball is what way they have to move..they have to stay low, shuffle (so no leg over leg), arms still out..everytime you want to switch slap the ball..& whenever you want feel free to randomly throw the ball & have them pass =]

    2. another one is just practicing approachs...

    3. four corners, which is where you have four lines facing inward like a "+" have two balls in play...the lines facing eachother is who they are passing too..once a ball is hit they must hustle to the next line..alsoo they must call their "ball" or "mine"..

    4. another would be called the setting game..have your girls in teams of three..this is kinda like a mini volleyball game except the girls can only set & has to be set three times before going over..another thing is that the court is only up to the ten foot line..this game really helps with communication, control, & of course setting =]

    5. another is when you have about three girls laying stomach down on top of eachother which ever way they want so like cris cross or whatever..you slap the ball..free throwing it really high & they have to get up & decide who is going to get the ball..this is really helps communication...plus my varsity team found it to be really fun..

as for some advice..always stay positive, present their mistakes in a way that is not so harsh..cause i have had some mean coaches & it never helps. so i wish you luck & i hope i helped..if you ever need anything ill be happy to help..also if you need more drills =]

  7. 1) PUSH

This is the funnest game ever!!

3 people stand on the right side of the court and 6 people (in two rows of 3) stand on the left side. The coach stands on the left side and throws the ball to the right side to tart the game, if the ball hits the floor on the left side then the game keeps going. If the ball hits the ground on the right side, then the players who are on the right side get into the back of the line on the left side on the court. And the first row of the 3 players who were on the left side go to the right side of the court and do that over and over again. Until there is a team on the right side of the court who has stayed over there for more then like 10 (or whatever) points. It's kind of like King Of The Hill.

    2) SERVING GAME

Two teams, equally split up. Half on one side, half on the other. One player from each team lays on the ground on the opposite court of their team. Each player serves the ball and tries to hit the player on the ground. If they hit them then they go on the side and lay on the ground too (making the target bigger). The team who gets all of their players on the ground first, wins!

  8. queens court, you put 3 or 4 players on a side and have the  rest line up behind one side of the court, every time a "team" makes a point, they move to the "queens court" if theyre in the "queens court" allready they stay there,   after a point is made on the opposite side they go to the "queens court" and play there then the next 3 or 4 in line take the side opposite the queens court, its easy once you get the hang of it

  9. oh my gosh...its called lincoln logs!! there should be three kids to one team. all three girls will lie on top of eachother and you will throw the ball on the ground the girls will try and get up as fast as they can and get to it before it bounces again...they will volley with the other team until one team loses...next team of three takes its place.
