  1. Cool I'm also looking forward to seeing (and hopefully competing in) women's boxing in the 2012 Olympics.

To start, try to find a good gym that offers a boxing class in your area that way you'll have a trainer that that knows what they're doing.  After that listen to everything they have to say and follow anything they tell you to do, if you're not used to working out then get used to it and just do it.  After a while you might be able to be in some amateur fights and eventually you might have a chance to qualify.

  2. there are boxing schools all over the place ...... dont know where west yourshire is but i bet there is a school somewhere close

  3. west yorkshire??? ha ha. B*TCH!!!!!!

  4. Find a good boxing gym. There are plenty of gyms around. Look for one with good instructors. That's the key, far more so than equipment, location, etc.

And you're right: It's not just boxing skills. There's general conditioning, good nutrition, etc.

You'll probably run into some resistance, since boxing is traditionally a male sport. And you may well find yourself mostly practicing/sparring with males your own size. That's OK. Just be aware of it.

My son was on his high school's varsity wrestling team, and the team had a female wrestler. She was very, very good--first girl from Virginia to win a match at states. She's now on a wrestling scholarship at a very good university.

One thing she discovered (and my son, who looks younger than he actually is) is that people who don't know your skill level will immediately assume you don't know what you're doing. After about 30 seconds of competition, they'll learn the hard way.

So, give it a shot. Find a good boxing school. And remember that it's not just technique, but strength, conditioning, nutrition, and so on.

    Good luck.
