Question:

I'm 18 and hoping to have a baby within the next four years or so, but my cycle is really irregular.

I want to have a baby young in life (not necessarily right now) , but I'm afraid my irregular cycle will prevent that. Currently, my last period was around the beginning of April. It been about four months.

I worry that something may be really wrong, like my irregular cycles could lead to infertility or something. I don't know how to ask my doctor about this because I'm afraid they'll give me a lecture on getting pregnant young or whatever.

Is there any advice anyone can give me on regulating my cycle? Anyone with irregular periods like mine who has gotten pregnant, or is trying?

  1. If your periods are irregular enough that your last cycle was in April, you should mention this to your doctor.  This doesn't mean that you can't have children, it just means it will be more difficult because you aren't ovulating as much as other women.  You should get checked out because there are sometimes things that doctors can do to help.  The younger you are when you get checked the better.

A word of warning, the doctor may suggest you take birth control pills.  This will regulate your cycle only as long as you are on the pills and will not solve the problem at all once you come off of them.  Also, some women find that they can not get pregnant right after they come off of the pill, so this may not be the right choice for you.   I would ask for a medical solution, not a temporary fix.

  2. I'm 19 and TTC #2. I also have extremely irregular cycles. I've been charting for 2 years and they range from 29 days to 40. I hate having such irregular cycles! It makes it really hard to figure out when I will ovulate. We have been using ovulation predictor kits though. They really seem to help.

Even though my cycles are so messed up... it's normal for me. Some people literally just have wacky cycles. Good luck!

  3. I found the ovulation kits pretty effective, it's a little costly but it worked for me within 2 months. Hope that helps :)

  4. I always had irregular periods from day one, and I had 3 beautiful children. This will not affect you from getting pregnant. It is just harder to figure conception some times.

  5. I THINK YOU NEED TO SEEK A GYN SPECIALIST BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE REAL SERIOUS PROBLEMS THAT WILL BE BIGGER IN THE FUTURE WHEN YOU ARE READY.THE DOCTORS ARE MOST LIKELY TO TELL YOU FIRST IS A HORMONE PROBLEM AND PRESCRIBE BIRTH CONTROL AS A METHOD OF CURE.SECOND YOU SHOULD HAVE THEM CHECK FOR A THYROID PROBLEM AS ALL DOCTORS DON'T THINK TO CHECK FOR THIS.THIRD IT CAN BE PCOS(POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME)GOOGLE IT FIRST.ALL OF THESE CAN BE THE PROBLEM,AND IF NO LUCK(MEANING ITS NOT ANY OF THESE)THEN ITS SOMETHING BIGGER LIKE FIBROIDS WHICH CAUSE REAL BAD BACK PAIN AND CAN INTERRUPT ALL YOU DAILY ACTIVITIES. i HAVE HAD IRREGULAR PERIODS FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS SINCE I HAD MY DAUGHTER AND WAS AFFRAID TO CHECK THE PROBLEM UNTIL MY HUSBAND SAID HE WANTED TO TRY FOR HIS FIRST CHILD,ANDALL MY DOCTOR SAID WAS MAYBE HORMONES BUT IF YOU DON'T ASK QUESTIONS YOU SUFFER FROM NOT CONCEIVING AND OTHER HEALTH ISSUES. GOOD LUCK AND ASK YOU DOCTOR TO CHECK FOR THESE FIRST BEFORE THINKING ABOUT PRESCRIBING BIRTH CONTROL.

  6. I recomend going to your OBGYN, tell her/him that you want your periods to be more regular and what they will most likely do is recomend putting you on birth control, it regulates your period and only takes a few months to adjust to. Don't be scared to talk to them about it, you don't even have to bring up conception with them, just let them know that your concerned about it and they will take care of you, that's what their there for. Good luck =)

  7. Well... You should ask the dr. tell him ahead of time you've not come there to be lectured && that ur not doing this now u just are curious for the future.. alot of women have had pleanty of children with irregular cycles.. When I started TTC ..my cycle changed from being ALWAYS never failing 28 day cycle to a 24 day cycle..lol may not be a huge change but..it did for some reason?? We've been ttc for 5 months now.. Just received Ovulation Kit today. After much reading && seeing other's results on it...seems to be a wonderful source.. also there's alot of helpful medications that can be taken to regulate cycles more & help ovulate if that is what is needed. You definitely should go ahead & go to the dr. But check this website out www.babyhopes.com good luck...**BABY DUST**

  8. I'm the same way! My last period was in June and I couldn't tell you when it was before that. My fiance and I are kind of trying off and on but I OFTEN think about not being able to have any :( I haven't asked the Dr & am just hoping something works! I got a pap smear about 2 weeks ago so we'll see if that comes back okay I'l @ least know that much! Good luck!!

  9. I think you definitely should go see your doctor.  I understand where you are coming from, worried about a lecture.  But, I think if you just go in there, explain that your periods are incredibly irregular, and you want to get checked out because you are worried about it affecting your ability to conceive later in life, there's no need for a lecture.

It would be best to go visit your GYN.  Since you're 18, you may not have one yet, but I recommend getting one.  You should start going when you are 18 anyway, and you can voice your concerns to that doctor.  I hope that helps.  Best of luck with everything!

  10. Thats what ive been thinking about mine cuz i do too... But my mom said that shes had really irregular periods and she had 4 kids.. so idkk

  11. I had (and still have) irregular periods.  I (we) started trying when I was 26 and I became pregnant when I was 29 after our 2nd IVF.  I was told that being irregular is not exactly the cause of infertility but the cause of the iregularity can be, i.e. cysts in uterus, PCOS (google it) and so forth.

Do not hesitate to ask your doctor.  There is no need to share with them your desire to become pregnant.  Just tell them of your concerns about becoming pregnant with the irregular periods, because they probally won't go away and the problem may be able to be corrected now and not later or it may worsen and lower your chances of becoming pregnant.  ASK THEM - They are they to help.  Remember you pay them!!!

Bring a friend if you need support to your next visit or ask for a consultation visit.

    Good luck.

  12. Yes, you will get a lecture but go anyway. Prolactinoma, thyroid problems...those are all things that a doctor can check for and then treat. If you do want to have kids, better to get this out of the way now than to wait until you're 35 to deal with it.

  13. I am 24 yrs. old and last year I was diagnosed with PCOS and also being diabetic. I no longer have to take my diabetes medicine but PCOS has my periods irregular etc. Please go to the Doc because you can save your ovaries and have beautiful babies.
