Insurance is regulated on a state by state basis.  Unless it's life insurance, you're going to have problems using it in a different state.

But it would be helpful if you said what KIND of insurance.  Renters?  Car?  Health?  Life?

A lot of insurance companies cover you across the country--just call them and ask what your coverage is in the state you are in. Worst case scenario, they may only cover you for emergency or urgent care.
