I want to build credit. What should i do to get a credit card ?

My mom said she is going to put the cable and cell phone bills under my name so that i can build credit. Is that going to build my credit ?

  1. WHY CANT U GET CARD ..UR NOT SAYING THE REASON... YEAH CREDIT CARDS WILL BUILD CREDIT IF AND ONLY IF YOU PAY PROMPT..... IF U CANT GET CARD THEN ASK TO GET PREPAID CARD .. CAN ONLY SPEND WHAT U PUT IN ....JUST PAY WHATEVER U BUY IN FULL OVER TIME U WILL GET A REG. CARD AS THEY SEE U PD PROMPTLY ........

  2. I don't even think cable or cell phone are mentioned on your credit report (not on mine) unless delinguent, because they do not extend credit to you.  Although, that may help getting cable and phone service when you get your own place.

I did not get a credit card until I was age 21 (co-signed by my dad with $300 limit while in college), but that is now part of my 35 year credit history (since 1973), and my dad has passed on.

While more recently credit card companies were giving out cards to anyone with a pulse, with the credit crunch you likely need to start out with a pre-paid credit card that limits you to what you pay in advance.  If you handle that properly and pay that on time, you will eventually have credit card offers up the wazoo.  But never spend close to the limit unless you will have the cash when the bill comes, or you will regret it (payments for a long time and/or overlimit fees)

  3. Putting utility bills in your name will NOT build a credit history.  Start with a secured credit card.

  4. Ask for a secured credit card seems like your only choice.

  5. Yes that will build your credit.

Also using your bank account for transactions should help too.

    Do you have a job?

  6. Start by getting a credit card through your bank if that doesnt help you can always opt for a secured card. I just got one through Bank of America and it allows you to set your own credit limit with a deposit. If that doesnt work out it is easy to get a store credit card. Start at Target or a electronics store something. I started with a Macys.

  7. Having bills under your name, and paying them regularly, will help.  They'll also look at what you make from a job.  No job probably means no credit card since they want to see that you can pay it back, unless you are a full time college student and they figure your parents will pay it for you.

You might be able to get a card if your mom cosigns.
