I'm 19, can I get married in Japan?

I have a dual citizenship; I'm Filipino & Japanese.

I'm currently in Japan; but legal age to get married in Japan is 20 and in the Philippines it's 18.

FACTS: I have a Filipino birth certificate and I'm a Filipino citizen..

Question is do I have to follow the law in Japan, because I'm in Japan?

or can I just get married here but following the law in the Philippines even though I'm in Japan?

  1. I'm pretty sure that if you're in Japan, you must follow the Japanese law of being 20.

  2. When in Japan, you have to abide by their rules.  Why not get married in the Philippines?

  3. Just wait the year and get married when you're 20.

    Problem solved.

  4. well since youre both filipino and japanese, and live in japan, i think you have to follow the japanese law

maybe you can wait a little longer, afterall youre 19

  5. For getting married in the country of Japan, yes Japanese have to abide by the Japanese rule. But foreigners can abide by their home country rule. Usually what you have to do is show your citizenship in that other country. And fill out a bunch of paperwork at the Japanese registry office. You need a signature of another person, but it doesnt have to be your parents.

I really think you should call your registry office and explain your situation, since your situation is unique with the dual citizenship.
