i've got the two top ones, they're mostly all the way in, at least. they're taking forever to come in, and my mouth has been sore for a long time because of it.

no sign on the bottom ones though. is this normal?

i'm really worried i'll have to get them all removed, and i'm horribly scared of the dentist.

does anyone even know why humans need wisdom teeth?

  1. Not sure why we have them...

It sounds as if the teeth are impacted, meaning they are unable to move into place properly.  If they are causing you pain, you will likely need them removed.  This is a surgical procedure when they have not "erupted", but having gone through it myself, I can assure you it was pretty easy.  Waiting for surgery was the worst, but aftercare is fairly simple and as long as you follow your doctor's instructions regarding foods eaten, pain medications schedule, and good cleaning practices for the first few days you should be fine.  The people you hear talk about problems with dry sockets or infections are out there, but by and large most of us do just fine.  Try not to worry and remember that once they are out the pain will be done.  See your dentist for guidance.

    Good luck!

  2. I'm 19 and the dentist informed me I don't have them. Some people are born without them because they are really not needed. If you don't get them huzzah- less pain for you right?

  3. I am 27 and I still haven't gotten any of my wisdom teeth. I was told by my dentist that they are probably growing sideways and may never pop through my gums. Humans do not need them as most human mouths can not support the extra teeth. If they are hurting you yes you will need to get them removed. There should be no reason to be scared of the dentist. They will give you some mild sedatives and some pain killers while they are removing them. Then they should give you a pain killer to take for the next few days. If you have trouble with the dentist hurting your mouth under a normal cleaning ask them to use a numbing agent before they start. Mine does this everytime they clean my teeth as I have very sensitive gums.

  4. They're vestigial.  We don't need them, really, and because the shape of our heads have changed over time, they're actually more troublesome than anything.  It's not always necessary to get them removed if they aren't causing problems, but quite frequently the do cause problems.  If they're all the way in and your mouth is still sore, I'd suggest that you go see a dentist about getting them removed.  The surgery isn't really that big of a deal if they've grown in normally (i.e. and aren't impacted, or sideways, etc).

However, not everyone has all four wisdom teeth (or even any at all in some cases).  My brother was lucky enough not to have wisdom teeth; I, on the other hand, had all four, but I only needed one removed because of the way it was growing in.  An x-ray should be able to determine fairly handily if your bottom wisdom teeth are going to come in.  On the other hand, if your bottom teeth are impacted, it could be troublesome.  There's a nerve running through the jaw, and there are occasions when the teeth will grow against the nerve.  You'd probably want to get them removed sooner than later in such a case, but the surgery itself is riskier when they're against the nerve.

  5. Well I got mine when I was 20 so i think that is about the correct age group to get them.
