My OB told me to get folic acid in addition to prenatal vitamins because of my age. Seems like he suggested a pretty hefty milligram dosage recommendation on the folic acid....like 4 mg pills? Can't remember....There are so many freaking brands out there...I'm overwhelmed. Looking for a simple brand for folic's w/ a hefty mg dosage. Can you help me clear this up?

  1. The recommended dose is 400mcg, some doctors recommend higher.  I'm taking a prescription prenatal that includes 1,000 mcg of folic acid or 1mg.  4mgs seems like a lot (unless you've been diagnosed with MTHFR or Factor V Leiden or some other clotting disorder).

I'm sure your prenatal plus an additional 400mcg supplement should be fine.  You might want to double check with your doctor that he wants you taking 4 mgs.

Also, I would like to add... please please please... if you are not pregnant in 4-6 months on your own, please run, don't walk, to a fertility specialist.  At 40+, every cycle counts and the longer you wait for treatment, the longer it will take to get pregnant, even if you've been pregnant  before.  It's a whole different ball game after 40.

    Good luck.
