I'm trying to determine if a 54cm would be too small and also if a 58 cm would be too big.

These are my choices of bike (Specialized Tricross Expert) however I will not be able to try them out 1st.

  1. It depends on how you're put together, but probably a 56cm will be the right size.....possibly the 54.  Unless you have realllly short legs and/or gorilla arms, the 58 will be too big/long.   Be sure to spend time with a shop and set up a few sizes to fit you on test rides before you buy....and check out different brands.  Take your time shopping and testing to find the best fitting bike....it'll pay off.

  2. 54cm is just one measurement used to fit a bike to you.

some people have long legs and short torso

some have long arms.. it is best to go to a bike shop that offers to measure you first then let you test ride.. improper fit will hurt. and make you not enjoy the ride.

  3. Go to a bicycle store to get a properly sized bike.  They will even adjust it for you.  Your height is not sufficient info to be able to find the right size for your bike.  It is actually more dependent on your leg size to determine the proper wheel size, and your torso size to determine the frame size.

  5. The bike shop will help your with the fit, there are other things to consider beside frame size.  Your inseam will differ from other people the same height as you. The link will explain some of the basics.

  6. I'm 5'10" with average proportions and my 56cm Madone is a perfect fit.

There are a lot of bikes on the market.  Don't buy the wrong size just because of the price.  You will regret it long after you have paid the bill.
