  1. you don't need to be athletic to play tennis. Your spirit is enough. Meet at a local/community park that gives tennis lessons for cheap or ask friends. Rent a tennis video/ look online youtube for instructional videos. GOOD LUCK!

  2. hi lowell..

Me too, love to play tennis, but (like you) I don't know when and where to start. But in my case only financial is the problem. But there are many people who can help you.

    First,you should research first!

Second, get inspired.Search for things that motivates you most to play tennis.

Third, search for places near you where you can play tennis.

Fourth, don't bother if your body is not as athletic as some;but feel the excitement of playing tennis.you will soon discovered that tennis mold your muscles.Promise.Like me,I am thin (not very thin huh) but I play tennis and my muscles molds.

    Fifth,get your tennis gears.Your tennis racquet,tennis balls,tennis shoes,and tennis clothes.

    Last,enjoy it.Feel the excitement!

I hope you enjoy playing tennis because its great.Promise!

    Good Luck and God bless.

  3. I will make this simple, because when you start tennis you need to keep it simple and learn the best way for you personally to be playing.

These are the basic things you need to learn when you first start:

    backhands

    forehands

    volleys

    serving

The best way to start is to go down to a tennis club, you could maybe enrol yourself in a beginners tennis competition. Or you could start getting coaching, (either in a group or by yourself).

Try to get a friend to start with you, you will probably make more friends when you start, but it's always more fun and relaxing when you have a frined to play with. Also playing doubles is a great way to learn and have fun with your friends.

Don't go on any tennis sites to start off with. You need to find your own style before getting into too many detals. Also it can be daunting if you don't know the terms they are using or what they are talking about.

Hit a ball against a wall, or just play practice matches with friends or family. Find out what grips work best for you and if a double or single handed backhand works best.

If you can watch any tennis on TV it really does help. Ever since I have started to watch it my game has improved and I have figured out not just how to hit the ball.. but where to hit it and the best way to get around your oponents. (Federer is a great player to watch because he is versatile and can play well at net, from the baseline, or when he serves. He plays a smart game, he doesn't just hit the ball hard).

Have fun!! You're not going to learn if you don't enjoy yourslef - don't get worried about losing or winning - trust me you won't learn if you don't enjoy the sport and try your best.

This site will help if you don't know how to keep score:

    - Good luck! Tennis is a great sport whether you're athletic or no, and it won't matter if you start playing later than others - you will soon catch up!!

  4. Tennis is a great sport! All you need to do is go out and buy you a tennis racket and find a court near by. (you can even practice at home if you have a wall). There are many different things you need to learn in order to play tennis including all the rules. The best way for you to learn is to research for yourself. may i suggest looking online. Youtube has some great intructional videos on how to hit a forehand and a backhand. And i am sure there are many other sites out there. If you have a team that you can join near by that may be the way to go. or if you can afford to pay an instructor that is a good way to go as well. tennis is all about form so youll need to really research how to hit the ball before you even start. mainly though...just have fun! find someone you know who wants to play as well and just get out and play. as they say practice makes perfect! good luck!

  5. lowell u should go to gym n build up ur musles......... than start practicing on a wall..... get a tennis racquets and a few good balls.. start serving the balls on d wall...... once u hav mastered d skillz start practicing on a real tennis court.........

then ask a few of ur frenz who can play 2 play with u.......

  6. Get a racquet,a ball,an empty wall, and hit the ball with the racquet towards the wall.Start closer,1m,get used to the feel of the ball on your racquet.Move back if you hit the ball past you.And from there, take steps backwards when you are able to hit it harder.Aim for a height at your chest, brush your the back of your ball from down-to-up.Then,when you can get consistent shots, hire a coach and start the basic drills. That way,you won't waste money correcting your groundstrokes(long time my friend),can find a way to hit the ball as comfortably as you can,and you will experience through trial and error, making you an 'experienced' beginner.Everybody has his/her own style of Tennis, the habits, etc. And you will be much better off correcting your own mistakes.

PS : Search for Tennis Groundstroke. Go read on how to perform the basic groundstroke. About.com's Jeff Cooper has some good examples.
