So, again, stress - pressure...getting too much! Does anyone know if your diet can affect your stress levels? And, what can I drink/eat before my game (besides sugary energy drinks and gatorade) to help me stay energized for some of those last shots?

  1. no one can give you a good answer as no one knows what you eat. best advice go see a nutritionist so they can tell you if and what you are lacking in your diet. also omega 3 tablets help concentration levels stay primed. if your stressed take a break, it gets to everyone.

  2. Diet can definitely affect your mental state, and anything sugary or with caffeine is likely to make you more nervous than less.  Both caffeine and sugar can spike your blood sugar levels, after which you 'crash' and have an energy low and loss of mental focus.

What you need pre-game is complex carbohydrates with a limited amount of protein.  Any sugars should be natural, like you find in fruits.  Peanut Butter on whole wheat with a banana on the side.  Stay away from sodas, energy drinks, even gatorade.  Gatorade or other electrolyte replacement drinks are fine during the game but probably not right before.

Of course, the mental aspect is still that to some degree; mental.  If you have confidence in yourself and in your team-mates that goes a long way to helping.  Practice hard, know what you are capable of, then go out and do it.

I was a waterpolo goalie many years back, I do know what its like!  But in the final analysis its still a game, and its supposed to be fun!  Have fun with it!  And best of luck!
