I'm British and I'm going to Southern India in the summer. How should you dress on the beaches?

If you want to go in the sea would a bikini be ok, or do you have to be more respectable?

  4. First don't come to South India in summer because its to hot down in south and you can wear bikini on the beaches just like many other foreign tourists for more log on to http://www.easydestination.net

  5. Hi

    It depends which beach you will be visiting in South India. There are several hotels and ressorts that on are beach front. If you stay at those hotels and go to beach you can be clad in a bikini.. However it is suggested that you cover yourself till walking to the water. Beaches in Goa and Kerala see lot of western tourist and are ok with seeing tourist in Bikini and  tourists donot attract second look. Please feel free to be your self. India is warm and welcoming.

Definitely depends on where and with whom you will be going.  If you will be w/ lots of tourist then feel free to wear your bikini.  I am American and whenever I go I actually wear a punjabi style dress so that I am completely covered except for my arms.  Indian men are not used to seeing so much skin so if you go alone you have more chances of being harassed.  Covering your legs is more important then covering your top.  Indian saris expose a great area of the tummy and chest/back area.  

    In short you don't "have" to do it but at least the first day you might take along a little extra clothing and then decide how comfortable you are.
