Question:

I'm Concerned about fetal Alcohol Syndrome?

I've noticed for a while now that my 2 1/2 year old had "different" eyes. I asked the pediatrician if this could be indicative of some disorder. She didn't seem to think so. Well, I finally found out through research it's called epicanthal folds. And - it's an indicator of either young age, a type of down syndrome, or FAS. I feel like my heart is about to burst because I did drink before I found out I was pregnant. But I didn't have even a single drink when I found out i was pregnant. I found out about 4 - 6 weeks. The only thing though is - he doesn't have any behavioral problems, or any of the other signs. Flat upper lip, thin lip, short nose. But I'm so scared!!! Could he just have epicanthal folds without it being related to anything? He's 2 1/2. His pediatrician even said "wow, he doesn't have any problems does he" because he did so good getting shots. Just the sweetest, calmest kid around. I hope that didn't jinx everything and be like *famous last words* Am I being too paranoid?

  1. Considerations

The presence of an epicanthal fold is normal in people of Asiatic descent. An epicanthal fold is also common in children with Down syndrome. Epicanthal folds may also be seen in young children of any race before the bridge of the nose begins to elevate.

    Causes

Epicanthal folds may be normal for people of Asiatic descent and some non-Asian infants. However, it may also be due to certain medical conditions, including:

    Down syndrome

    Fetal alcohol syndrome

    Turner syndrome

    Phenylketonuria (PKU)

    Williams syndrome

    Noonan syndrome

    Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome

When to Contact a Medical Professional

This trait is usually found before or during the first well-baby exam. Call your health care provider if you notice epicanthal folds on your child's eyes and the reason for their presence is unknown.

What to Expect at Your Office Visit

The health care provider will obtain a medical history and will perform a physical examination.

Medical history questions documenting epicanthal folds in detail may include the following:

    Family history

Are any family members affected with Down syndrome or other genetic disorder?

Is there any family history of mental retardation or birth defects?

What other symptoms or abnormalities are also present?

A child who is not Asian and is born with epicanthal folds may be examined for additional signs of Down syndrome or other genetic disorders.
