Its almost as if I was blind, to just words. Its so hard to explain, I can follow alone in text but I can't read it.

I'm taking Medical Terminology and have tried almost every alt format to read this book. Every time I get alt format for it, it is not understandable. If I don't fined a way to read this book I'm going to have to drop the class.

I want to become and EMT, and then maybe a writer, but first I need a job. I can't fill out any applications with out some one help. And I don't know how I'm going to fill out reports when I'm an EMT, I guess all just figure it out when i get there.

  1. i am not trying to be smart but check in to a special class that can help you because it is considered a learning disability, also talk to a guidence counsler, or talk to your doctor to see if there is anything he can do to help. if these dont work for you check into a tutoring class that specializes in learning disabilities.

  2. You got a great attitude and dont give up, definetely handle one hurdle at a time. There are online cassette tape ( i know i am dating back now), but i used them to help me study when i was at drexel university takind my nursing courses. They have a 4 disc set that goes over the basic termonology and then you could maybe ask your teacher for extra help and explain your situation to her so she knows what is going on. But, dont give up or drop out.

  3. Do you have documentation to prove that you are dyslexic ?  If so , you can apply for accommodations in classes and you would be eligible for the free book tape program.    They will actually  tape your specific textbook if it is not already available. There should be a director in charge of accommodations or something like that at the school.   If you have not been identified, ask about getting testing now.

That is a short term fix.  You are right that you will have to be able to read and write well for your chosen career.    The second website is for a book ( I also have the taped book, so look for one of those) on a teacher who got all the way through college and was nominated for teacher of the year  and couldn't read children's books to his  kids.  See how he was able to learn to read as an adult. So, find a tutor who is trained in Orten-Gillingham techniques for example.  I have used F.A.S.T Learning and Wilson also with adults.   Dyslexia will always influence your life, but does not have to rule your life.    The oldest student that I have worked with has been 45.  I have an article about a man who learned to read when he was 98.  So, it is never too late.

The third site is for the Internaitonal dyslexic association.  The last site is about George Dawson , the man who learned to read at 98 and wrote his first book at the age of 102.   Man, he should be a motivation to everyone!
