Question:

I'm Learning the Guitar

I want to learn the guitar, but I don't have time in my schedule to get lessons. I already know how to read music and all about music theory, and I wanted to know if anyone knew of any "teach yourself" books that work well. And if you do, where I could get one :]

Thanks!

  1. Guitar for Dummies is great. I have it

  2. It depends on what style you want to play, but a good basis is to get a book of chord shapes and start with those. You will be aware that every key has 3 basic chords in it, so start with easy shapes like A D and E, then go on to G. This will give you the keys of A (A,D,E) and D (D,G,A) . Start by fingering each chord pressing down enough to make the strings sound (This is where the pain kicks in !) when you can do this, move on to another chord, then practise changing between the 2.

A lot of the old rock'n'roll hits are in A D and E - Johnny B Goode, Hound Dog, Blue Suede Shoes etc.

Tuning - the top string (at the bottom as you look at it) is E above middle C, then B G D A E down from there.

Hope this helps, but please feel free to email me if I can help further(go to my profile)

  3. I stumbled upon Teach Yourself Visually Guitar when I first started out and didn't have a teacher. It's a really good book to use if you're a visual learner: LOTS of pictures, easy to follow instructions (to the point), and it's just very useful. It covers everything from different music genres (how to play them), repairs, etc.

If I remember correctly, a new version of it is out at Barnes & Nobles. It may be at Borders as well.
