Question:

I'm On Nexium. Is this normal?

Well, I'm a 15 year old girl, and After battling with c**p acid reducers from stores, my doctor said it was "definitely wasn't normal" so he finally prescribed me 40mg of Nexium.

However, while the heartburn has subsided (when i take the pill), i notice that other symptoms haven't gone. Likw "wet burps", fluid coming coming up and backing up in my throat, hiccups and shortness of breath. The strange thing is that i don't experience the burn in my chest regardless of these things.

Is this normal? Please tell me, I'm quite curious!

Thanks so much!

  1. Ok, I am not a doctor but I can suggest this:

You need discipline and avoid tough/bad food for the next 4 months:

    1) alcohol out

    2) soda drinks, like pepsi, coca-cola, out, because they are acid.

    3) very acid liquids, out

    4) watch for peanuts.

    5) do not eat or munch before going to bed.

    6) you may have problem with milk and ice cream, then out.

    7) chocolate, (I know, I know it is tough), out

    give your stomach a break.

No horizontal position, laying down, or go to bed after eating: wait at least 2 1/2 or 3 hours. The food in you stomach is slowly coming back in the esophagus and is destructive and causes heartburns.

Ask your doctor to have an X-ray of your stomach and check your liver. That clears problems if any.

Take the Nexium pills as prescribed.

With discipline, your stomach will be back in its normal state.

  2. hi kelsi, i really dont know, im not a doc or anything....... but, i can tell u something: u better go to another doc and have a 2nd opinion. he can tell u exactly. better do that bfore it passes a lot of time. is worth it..

    good luck ;)

  3. It might depend on how long you have been taking the Nexium for.  Maybe you haven't been taking it for long enough to work sufficiently.  If you are taking it every day, you may need to take it for at least a week to give it a 'chance'.  Follow the directions of your doctor and, if these symptoms persist, I would go back and see him.

Since the pain has subsided, Nexim may be 'masking' the pain but not 'treating' the symptoms, such as fluid coming back up.  It's unpleasant and, if it continues, I would talk with my doctor about it.

I have included a link to a Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) for Nexium to give you some more information about the medication (including side effects).  For most medication, if it's new, you can ask your local pharmacy for a copy of the CMI for that medication.  It helps if you know a bit about what to expect while taking something new.

  4. nexium has coated your esophagus but you are still having acid reflux. not normal may need something stronger or different
