Question:

I'm Only 18, But My Eyesight is -6.00, How Bad Is That?

I've worn glasses since the fourth grade, and I've recently started college. I'm going to school for multimedia design so I work a lot on computers and my eye sight has gone down another .75. I'm worried. How bad is -6.00? I know it's high because most people I know with glasses are around 1.25 - 2.00. Could I go blind? What's the chances I'll need lasik surgery? Is there anything I can do to keep my eyes from getting worse?

  1. that's ridiculusly low...

  2. First, get a pair of workstation distance glasses.  That makes the screen clear and visible at about 18" - 24", or however far you sit back from the computer.

My vision was 20/800.  I first had RK surgery in the 70's.  I was 20/20 for several years.  Later I got Lasik and went back to 20/20.

Save the lasik for after college when money is more plentiful.  But do give serious consideration to the special glasses for PC work.  You will avoid a lot of eye strain.

Oh yes, one other thing...stay away from boys.  They carry a lot of diseases, worms, and warts.  They can't be good for vision either.  Wait till you graduate, then marry a rich one so you can have the lasik!!!

This is the voice of experience speaking!

  3. -6 means you are legally blind.  Sorry to tell you.  Lasik is okay, but I probably wouldn't consider it.  You can get free Lasik exams at a lot of places, to see if Lasik is right for you.  If you have an active lifestyle - like scuba diving, sky diving or play sports where you could get hit in the eye... I wouldn't recommend Lasik.  As long as you don't have astigmatism, need bifocals and have past -6.00, you should be fine with contacts.

    Good luck in college!!!

  4. not to worry ur eysight isnt as bad as mine

im 17 and my left eye is -6.5 and my right eye is -5.0 so ur doing better than me

i got contacts so that lowers the prescription too

  5. thats awful....

  6. It's like your double blind in the dark.

  7. I have always had very bad vision, -5.75, since I was little.  My eyes realy haven't gotten worse,  I had contacts for 10 years and then my eyes didn't like them anymore, so I am back to glasses.  I bet your lenses are thick too!!! LOL
