I'm Scared to jump!?

Hi,

I could probably do way more than I can do (in figure skating) but I am afraid to jump! I just don't have the nerve to throw myself over the ice, cold, wet, hard ice. What tips do you have to help me??

I really need help, my coach is getting frustrated with me.

Thanks! ;)

  1. just keep jumping without the skates and then finally you will try out with skates.

    gooodluck !

  2. I used to be scared of jumping.

I practiced jumping off ice, heaps.

I started wearing padding, on my knees and hips- just so i would know that if i feel it would be all good - this is a reassurance thing. Basically pad where you fall on most, then you won't be scared to fall on that part coz you know it wont hurt. I like the gel pads personally.

Also try bringing a spare pair of clothes so if you do fall and get really wet, you can change. So that way when you jump your not worried about getting wet.

Another thing would be to 'practice' in your head. Watch yourself doing the jumps and landing. A bit of positive thought never hurt anyone.

You also have to fully believe in yourself. And try only to think of landing properly.

  3. Keep Practicing. However cliche it may sound, practice makes perfect. Stressing yourself out about it is the worst you can do. Just take a breath, clear your mind, and just remember that every professional skater has fallen in his/her carrer. It's a lot less painful falling doing 1 or even 1/2 a rotation than when you get to do your triples. The advice here is great; practicing jumps off ice is essential once you get to more rotations in your jumps, and it helps with height and form. Butt pads are also great, if you're willing to put up with people staring at them. :)

Good luck, and I hope this helps!

  4. Yeah just do little jumps to start with, enough to lift you off ice surface but no more and once you get confident with those go a bit higher but stay within your confidence level. Ask your coach's advice too as they may have ideas for confidence giving.

As to falling, I usually fall over at least once for every new trick I attempt but I'm used to just brushing ice off and trying again. If you do feel yourself going just relax and you will hurt yourself a lot less than if you are tense.

  5. well i used to play ice hockey and i was REALLY good and i could jump and stuff and spin around... i was scared to try it but, i just jumped really low low low low then got higher, try to master the smaller jumps them when you feel comfortable do big ones... if your figure skateing you are going to get hurt.. no doubt.. so might as well just do it..

  6. just go for it! it's ok if you fall everyone does. Even professional skaters do.....

  7. i skate as well and i wuz always afraid 2 jump. 1st of all make sure u practice ur jumps off ice, it rilly helps. also i no it sounds odd, but ther is something called a "butt pad" and when u fall it doesnt hurt as bad. wut i did insted of jumping is i rilly enjoyed ice dance and started up doing it w/ my bro 3 yrs ago. the good thing is u dont hav 2 jump at all  u just hav 2 perform, do some lifts, twizzles, spins and footwork. once u find a partner that u can trust lifting u, if u practice and work hard u can become rilly good. the first year my bro and i did ice dance ( i did freestyle/jumping before starting up ice dance) we qualified 4 junior nationals and went the next 2 yrs as well. i find ice dance rilly fun especially u dont hav 2 worry about jumping and i still am doing ice dance because i hav liked it so much. hope this helps!

  8. You just have to suck it up and do it. I wish I had a better answer for you, but skating is a hard, demanding sport. You're going to fall (everyone does), and sometimes, it's going to hurt. But it's nothing compared to the feeling of nailing a jump. Give it your all and eventually you'll become less worried about falling and more concerned with doing it right. I also think it would be a good idea to express your concerns to your coach. S/he will understand! Go for it and good luck!
