I'm USA, He's UK. Need divorce! I live here. Will I loose citizenship there?

So if I live here in the US and he is now moving back to the UK and we want a divorce..will I loose my UK citizenship? Do I even have it now, if I never did any paper work for it? I wanted to live in the UK some day! Please help me out with some great answers!!

  1. You should have applied to UK residence while married. I doubt you will be able to get it now with the divorce.


  2. You need to contact someone in the UK that has the knowledge and deals with problems like you have, or someone in one of your state offices that deals with such matters, for your answer.

  3. If you never did any paperwork to obtain UK citizenship then you never even had it in the first place. Marriage to a British citizen does not under any circumstance bestow a foreign spouse with instant British citizenship. You also do not qualify to apply for British citizenship at all if you have not lived in the UK legally for at least 3 continuous years.

    If you wanted to live in the UK some day then you will have to go through normal channels. Your former marriage to a citizen of the UK will be irrelevant.

    Edit: there is no way to obtain British citizenship without living legally in the UK for 3 years. Married or not.
