Do you think women are just as capable strength wise? Also, I have Social Anxiety Disorder - would an activity help this?

  1. Tae Kwondo is mostly just flashy..ecpecially if you are taking it in the states. Most dojos also just want to have as many black belts as they can and will rush you through.

I would recomend Karate or Ju- jitsu if you are looking for something that might actually help you with self-defence down the road.

  2. Yes! You should start taekwondo. It'll help your SAD, as a martial art can make you more confident and it helps you improve your mental strength as well as physical strength. It'll teach you to stay calm and controlled in bad situations.

There's no reason a woman can't be just as capable as a man in martial arts. That women are weaker than men is nothing more than a stereotype, and personally, I'm at least as strong as the guys in my class.

In ITF taekwondo, you learn a lot of self defence. WTF is more geared towards sport, and you tend to focus more on kicks than hand techniques. ITF is a fully rounded ma, and teaches both hand and foot techniques. In my class, we also learn throws and joint locks. There's also the philosophy side of ITF style, and perhaps the most well known of the 5 tenets is "Indomitable Spirit".

Also, taekwondo relies more on speed and agility than strength. Flexibility is also an important aspect, and women are usually more flexible than men.

  3. oh yea around here they have classes for the whole family!! and yes women can be!!!!!

yes and try asking a friend to go with u maybe to help with your disorder

    HAVE fun!

  4. See taekwondo doesn't really need alot of strenght and for those who think taekwondo doesn't have self defense maybe ITF doesn't but WTF does.Heck I bet both of them do what like in a street fight you can throw a guy down who could possibly be bigger than you or in muay thai you think he'll be watchin' you while you hit him you your elbow shin knee whatever. And sorry people like that  usually get on my last nerve AND yes it will definitely help you your disorder because in taekwondo you experience breathing meditation aerobic anaerobic exercises.Good luck I wish I helped

P.S:just because your asking will taekwondo help you proves that taekwondo is just for you.

  5. Tae Kwon do is more of a reflex, speed, and smart sport than a strength sport. Good techniques will cover for the lack of strength since TKD has a lot of critical kicks (knock outs, death kicks, etc.)

I really believe that TKD will help you overcome Social Anxiety, but you really have to be into it. You need passion and intense workouts/lessons.

    Good luck and Cheers.

  6. Women ARE just as capable strengthwise for something like TKD.  Unless you're interested in competitions I wouldn't worry too much about strength (who knows, maybe you will in the future).  If you're more interested in fitness and being social, just go and enjoy yourself.  By all means go with a friend or family member, and you should tell your instructor about your SAD.

  7. women are just as capable strength wise and are better gymnastically at many competitive events with martial arts due to the center of gravity is a womans hips where a mans is more across the shoulders.  depending on your reasons for taking gaykwondo i would suggest the only use for it is competition.

Aside from that it's pretty much useless and unpractical.

If you are taking it up for self defense there are much better styles you can learn and for a beginner at 16 I would suggest Tang So Do or Muay Thai or even Jeet Koon Do which the later of the two can be more difficult to learn and Muay Thai is a lot more physically demanding for a woman to be effective with.  But I've sparred with some very conditioned and strong women kickboxers that did just fine.

Focus on the reason you wish to learn and then find the answer for the style that best fits that need.  Grappling styles are a lot of submission holds, joint locks and sweeping take downs.  Best used by bouncers and competition type events.

  8. yes yes of course. i took taekwondo since i was 6 years old, now i am 19. i know many many say taekwondo is not that practical, but if that is the only martial art around you, well go for it. so far i have only learned taekwondo. It is sort of in my blood already because since young i have been learning it. it does give you confidence, as martial arts trains your mind and your body. you might not feel it as it works it magic quite slow. about strength, well of course we are capable. if your techniques are good, your strength will be there. as long as you practice often. it will help you in yr condition. good luck and enjoy!
