I'm planning to stay for just 5 days. Are there any must-sees? Until what time is it safe to walk around at night?

OK, as a caution, I would choose a city as a home base; that way you don't need to lug your stuff around each day. I stayed in Florence., as day trips to Rome, Venice, Pisa are available. Think of exactly what you want to see and do that.

As a tip, never travel early (5-6am) on the train. Be well guarded as the men that work these trains will try just about everything to get in bed with you. Have your passport and your train ticket on your person at all times. If you plan to travel by train, don't buy a Eurail pass; it's much cheaper to buy the Italian rail pass there as they often have sales; if you are a student, you save even more on hostels and trains!!

For me, I saw The Tower of Pisa, the Uffici in Florence, and in Rome, I saw the Colloseum, Vatican City, Parthenon.Sistene Chapel, the Government. I walked all over Rome and in the evening, I always made sure I walked in well lit areas, and was back at the hostel by 9pm.

Watch out for tourist traps: there are locals who work on the side at some venues who try to make money from you. For example: when taking your picture at the Colloseum, the gladiators will tell you it's free, but then say no, 5$ per pic and then take 3, so 15$ for them. You really need to stand your guard and be alert. I was just about caught in that but I told them, no, it was free!!

As well, if you take a cab before 6am, be prepared to pay double. They have a surcharge for any fares late in the night and early in the morning.

    Have fun!!

  5. Venice is quite save - even by night...

Have fun - buon viaggio !

  6. Enjoy, open your mind to new experiences, and watch out, hard to do but your good sense will prevail...
