Question:

I'm a Dem, but I was actually thinking-?

That Obama had a fair chance at losing once McCain solidified his ticket by choosing Romney. I was thinking "McCain/Romney wouldn't be the worst thing ever, even if we don't agree, they aren't super far rightests and they both have some level of substance." I thought many swing voters would see it the same and choose this centralist ticket. How could McCain have missed this and decided that "creation science" voters of America (who wouldn't vote for Barack anyhow) were the ticket he would ride on? Can anyone explain why Palin would draw more middle of the road (election deciding) voters than Romney?

But really, no need for attacks on anyone, I'm honestly curious and looking for peoples real opinions. I don't care about secret grand babies and ties to martians.

  1. She won't  she might get the Right Wing Extreamist to the polls now,  but  she wont pull the Middle of the road voter.

  2. Excellent question and excellent points.  I really believe that McCain thought that all of those disillusioned Hillary Clinton supporters would see Palin and jump on board.  I also think that McCain doesn't have a great opinion of the vp position, thinking that Palin could learn as she went along.  But, who knows?  Cyndi isn't getting any younger, maybe he's got some other plans for her, check this out.

  3. A Dem and you are "actually thinking" - good for you!  But, you might want to keep it secret from the party faithful, they tend to frown on that sort of thing.

I believe that two  of the main reasons that McCain chose Palin was because:  1) she is not a Washington insider and will bring a fresh outlook to DC.  Now THAT's change I can believe in!  2) she has the moral courage to stand up for her beliefs and the integrity to expose corruption where ever it's found.  Now those are attributes that I can respect.

  4. What really scares me is if he passes away, and we're left with Palin. We are going to be DOOMED.

I don't mean to be rude but face it..he's 72 and all that stress will make him age faster. The fact that suffered from cancer numerous times doesn't help either. Even Bill Clinton picked his VP by asking himself "What If I die?"

I think he only chose Palin to sway Hillary voters that were unsure about Obama.

  5. Go McCain!

If we elect Barack Obama, who knows, he could become a terrorist and destory USA. Plus his idol is one of the 9/11 attackers.

And also he is going to make us pay higher taxes.

  6. Because the far right was already worried about McCain's maverick streak and him being moderate so he needed a true conservative to solidify and amp up his base and get them fully behind his ticket

Hopefully people will see that a moderate president in McCain is better than a far far left "most liberal senator" president in Obama

    Lesser of two evils

  7. Well, your premise is incorrect.  McCain is not trying to win middle-of-the-road voters with the choice of Palin. He is trying to cater to the vocal socially conservative wing of his own party and he thinks, or someone in charge of his campaign thinks, that if the Republicans just offer all those Hillary voters, of both and of no party, a female on the ticket, that's all they need.   I think most people are a lot smarter than that.

  8. McCain/Romney, McSame/Palin, McBush/Pawlenty, McCain/God: all losing tickets. He's a doddering old fool and this most recent choice confirms it.

  9. I think Palin was picked for two main reasons: to solidify the conservative base for McCain and to try to entice weak-minded Clinton supporters.  Conservatives seem excited about the pick, so it worked in the first case.  I don't think it will work in the second because most Clinton supporters are smart enough to know Palin is no Hillary.  I do agree with your sentiment; I think choosing Romney would have won over more moderate voters than Palin will.  I think McCain will have a more difficult time winning the election with Palin on the ticket than with Romney.

  10. Fair question, fair answer. Sara Palin has the ability to solidify the Republican party far better than Romney. She has an 80% approval rating in her home state, she's (obviously) a woman, who will bring in the women's vote, and she is a charismatic, intelligent, dynamic person, who would bring credibility and responsibility back to Washington. She has fought political corruption in Alaska at great risk to her own career, she has a son who's leaving shortly for combat duty in Iraq, and above all, she is proud of America, unlike the Obamas.

  11. i'm intrigued- a dem thinking? sorry, you asked for that. you really think creation science defines mrs. palin ?

  12. Well she will definitely pull over a large chunk of the 18 million Hillary supporters who were burned by Obama.  She will also pull back some of the Republicans who hated the last 8 years and wanted change now that they have Palin, a woman who took on GOP government corruption in Alaska, as a REAL agent of change.  Plus, hockey mom voters are never in short supply.

  13. Palin, being a woman, would draw in many feminists and females alike, something that Romney wouldn't necessarily do.  She also presents change in the presidential campaign that's become the traditional male-dominated race.  This might sway many in favor of change, but not of Obama.  I am also a democrat.  I consider McCain's choice to be one of desperation.  I believe he's trying to shake things up and create chaos in an attempt to salvage what's left of his winning chances.  She also appears to be strong for many issues that he lacks background in.  It was a risky choice, but it may serve him well.  It's created quite a debate already.  Hopefully, this doesn't affect Obama's shots of winning too drastically.
