I'm a HUGE sports fan. How do I learn how to bet on sports and make a profit?

I'm a statistics junkie and I watch tons of sports. I usually enter the small office pools and pick em' contests at bars and do very well. I'm looking to learn how to bet on sports profitably and possibly turn this into a career as a handicapper. I'm a complete newbie and need advice!

I've been making a very good living betting sports and playing poker for almost two decades. There is some literature out there on how to handicap sports but it is fairly basic. I don't know what your level of exposure is to sports betting but if you need to start from the basics then I say check out twoplustwo publishing. They mostly do poker books but they will probably have some sports betting material. You might also want to look at Everyedge. They have discussion forums where you can talk to other sports betters. Again I find it a little basic but I've also been doing this for 18 years.

The other warning I'll give you is avoid scamdicappers.  These people will offer to sell you picks. They might even offer some for free for a while. Never give these people money. If they could actually pick winners at a consistent rate they wouldn't be looking to make a few hundred dollars off you. Same goes for people who offer to coach or teach you. Again if they were making money betting they wouldn't need the chump change that you'll give them for coaching.

Make sure you get all of the information you can before you decide to make this a career choice.  I am a recreational sports handicapper and I have seen dozens of would-be handicapper's fail because they didn't have all the information about what they are getting themselves into.  I suggest you visit my blog (http://www.jonathanbetsit.blogspot.com/) to get some basic information as well as the day-to-day life of a handicapper.  In addition, I would check out http://professionalgambler.com.  In addition, there are plenty of books out there on the subject.  I would recommend reading Sharp Sports Betting by Stanford Wong, Weighing the Odds In Sports Betting by King Yao, and How Professional Gamblers Beat The Pro Football Point-spread by J.R. It's tough to win at sports betting consistently.  But some folks can do it.  You need to know what stats to look at, and not to get emotionally attached to picks.  I.E. in NBA basketball, look at freethrow percent, avg score, avg score against, field goal percent, turnovers...anything that sways outcomes, check the stats.  Look at similar stats for other sports.  

Beware, some sites publish "agaisnt the spread" matchup stats for around 10 games played previously.  I.E. Spurs vs. Celtics.  Also note that these two teams don't see each other regularly, and some of the games from a year or two ago won't necessarily have an inference on games in the future, do to new players, coaches, etc.  

Also, learning how to manage your bankroll properly is equally important.  Don't risk more than 5-10% of your betting bankroll on one play.  And if you lose, don't overbet to chase losses.  This is the most common mistake that bettors make.  You have to separate your emotions from the stats, and start fresh the next day.

I would also check out the free picks listed at http://dagus-statistics.com where you'll find free sports picks daily to MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAA, and UFC picks when in season.  Compare the daily record to stats that you would normally see, and see how you would do.  The site above also gives you deposit tips and bonus codes if you're interested in online betting.  Hope this helps!
