From the Fafsa point of view, I want to know how to become independent so my parents income will not affect my grants, financial aid or grants. Last year I worked and my EFC was raised to $ 4600. The university took even what I had. They said that this was because I worked last year and made $ 3000.

I think I should probably see a financial adviser.

  1. Have a baby and/or get married. That will break dependency status. Other than that you're pretty much screwed, trust me I'm in similar situation. Maybe you should talk to a financial adviser at your school though.

  2. Hi-

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions:

    then you are considered independent.
