I am a beginner at golf which I took an interest to after my daughter began playing and I'm curious to know how could I get the feel of golfing? Is there a fee to go to the golf range? And, what do the numbers on the clubs indicate? Keep in mind I just purchased a complete set to get me started.

  1. take some free lessons

  2. There is nothing free in golf! :-)

Range balls will be anywhere from $5.00-$15.00 per bucket depending on the course!  Some top end courses will include range balls in the price of a round of golf!

The numbers on the bottom of your clubs are only there for a reference point.  A 3 iron has less face angle so you should be able to hit it further than you would a pitching wedge (PW) which has a lot of angle.  There is no correlation between the number and the distance or loft of the club..

A rule of thumb is as follows:

    Average length of amateurs-

    Driver (1 Wood) 240 yards

    Fairway Wood (#3) 220

    3-Iron 190-200

    4-Iron 180-190

    5-Iron 170-180

    6-Iron 160-170

    7-Iron 150-160

    8-Iron 140-150

    9-Iron 130-140

    PW 110-130

    Sand Wedge (SW) 90-110

Good luck!  This sport is aggravating, yet fulfilling!

  4. I suggest you head over to your local golf range, get a few baskets of balls, just try out your new clubs.  It only costs $3-5 for a bucket of balls.  If you decide you like it, I suggest you sign up to take lessons from a club pro.  The numbers on the clubs  indicate how high the ball will go with them.  It typically goes form 3 - P (P being the pitching wedge).  The lower the number, the lower and farther the ball will go, the higher number (P being the highest) means the ball will go higher but not as far.  Go out to a range and experiment for yourself.  I have always enjoyed golf and I'm sure you will find it to be great fun, exercise, and a quality way to spend time with your daughter.

If you have any specific questions, just ask!

  5. There is a fee to go to a driving range in that you paying for a bucket of balls to hit on their property.  I would suggest going to one and wack a few to get the feel of the swing, and don't be embarrassed if you miss the ball several times, people are busy working on thier own problems to laugh and point at you =).  You may also want to find a PGA pro or find a clinic at a range to help get you started in the right direction.  the numbers on the clubs indicate the kind of club it is, generally the lower the number the bigger the club and the farther the ball is supposed to go.

  6. I would suggest that you invest another $12 and get a copy of Hogan's Book - Five Lessons the fundamentals of golf.  It will get you off to a good start with solid fundamentals so that you don't wast five years trying to learn on your own.  The lower the number on the club, the lower the trajectory of the ball, and generally the further it will go.

  7. Go to a range, consider paying for a lesson or 2, get a bucket of balls or if it is an hourly rate, then plan on 30-60 minutes.

The numbers on the irons and metal woods help you know which to use for a distance.  A 1 metal wood (driver) may go 200 yards, then a 3 metal wood might go 160, and a 5 metal wood might go 140.  Same with irons, except the difference between numbers should be around 10 yards less for each higher number.

  8. Well I have been golfing for quite a few year now and the numbers on the clubs indicate how far you drive the ball.If you live by a large park with plenty of grassland then you could go there and practice or go to an indoor golf range. Get the feel on your own, make sure its comfortable for you (grip and posture and swing). Take a few practice swings and then try and hit the ball the way you did the practice swing. Try and practice on the grass and you'll know your doing it right if you hear a little crisp noise on the grass as you follow up and through on your swing. Also try the golf channel.

  9. you need lots and lots of practice
