Question:

I'm a casual runner...how much should I spend on running shoes?

I try to jog every other day for a half hour. It's not that much.

The thing is, I have some problems with my knee (the cartilage is wearing down) because I injured it and had surgery a few years ago.

Would it be better for me to invest a lot of money in good shoes? I have to think about my knee (it's that serious, the doctor said I could still run). But since I'm not doing any serious training, how important are the shoes? I probably wouldn't notice the difference between $130 or $80 shoes.

  1. Unfortunately running shoes are expensive, but a very important part of your routine. If you get wrong or "cheap" shoes you could mess up your legs or feet. The price difference is often because of the brand or the materials used to make the shoe. Most running shoe stores will help you out in finding the right shoe and may even give you a few choices. You could also go on ebay or amazon.com to find a shoe that you already tried on for cheaper. Cross-training may also help with your knee - I have issues with my knees too. Happy trails!

  2. You should go to www.runnersworld.com on the shoe finder. They show you different choices that would be best for you.

  3. Invest in good shoes. I have knee problems and I tape my knee or wear a brace whenever I go running. I use arch support in my shoes only when I run as well.... I probably look like a freak but its all good.

Investing in a good pair of shoes doesn't nesessarily mean you have to spend that much money! Just when going to the store... ask someone to help you find one with good arch support or good support in general. I got mine at bobs for 50 bucks this year... last year I got them at d icks for around that price too.

  4. Shoes are a worthwhile investment. I am 'retired' from running these days, but when i ran I often found less expensive shoes to be better for my running form and training regimen. But I had no major injury problems and preferred shoes without a lot of cushion or support, since i spent a lot of time keeping my form in top shape.

You should find the best shoes for your body, running style and training plan. It is worth spending what they cost, even if they ar on the higher end.
