I'm 20 years old and in college. There is a new Wal-Mart near my house and I want to work there third shift 5 days a week, 6 hours each night (30 hours). Do you think the pay and this many hours is fine for my age? Or should I get a job where I work more and make more? I'm not sure what the starting pay is, but I think it's $7-8. Also do you think they'll let me work that many hours? Thanks

  1. third shift (overnight) generally doesn't have 6 hour shifts.  There should be a shift differential for the overnight shift, that differs for different parts of the country.

Make sure you aren't shorting your sleep and study time. Priorities!

  2. You will start off as Part time no matter what. That is Wal-Mart policy. The max amount of hours you can work per week is 33. So this is good in your case. If they schedule you for that much. If you are a sales floor associate, chances are you wont get that many hours. I would reccommend being a Cashier. They are always needed, especially in the third shift. Not too many people want to work at that time, so it is a prime oppertunity for you.

As for pay, that varies based on your state's minumum wage. I am a CSM at Wal-Mart, so I do interviews for Cashiers. Currently, they start out at $8.40 an hour. Colorado's minumum wage is $7.02. So that's well above mimumum wage. Plus, if you pass your 90 day evalutation (which isn't hard to do) you get a 40 cent raise.

    Good luck!

  3. The issue of the number of hours you work has less to do with your age and more to do with whether you can handle that schedule and still keep up with your college studies.  They are by far much more important.
