ok I'm a first time bird owner i work at Petsmart (ive only been workin there for about 3 weeks) well i would like to know some things about a gouldian finch? I know a lot about just about any animal except birds. I was always afraid of them and then i got attached to this little finch we had in the sick room because she broke her leg and it healed but still isnt straight so they adopted her out to me. so heres some questions i have

Will my ceiling fan make her sick if its on very low? i sleep with it on but i havent been because im afraid it will make her sick

What kind of fruits can i give her?

How do you tell a male gouldian finch from a female? i think mines a female but im not 100% sure?

  1. the fan will not make your bird sick. Just quick drafts from hot to cold can get it sick. You can give lots of fruits and veggies to your bird. i recommend getting your information for a book though and not from online

  2. A ceiling fan won't make your bird sick.  I f you're worried just cover the top of the cage at night.  Here is a link that might help to answer some of your questions.  It sounds like this bird is very lucky to be with you.  Maybe she would like the company of another finch too as they are very social birds and like company.

  3. Well i keep my fan on, if it were in the wild it could handle a little breeze. as long as you dont give it a bath then it wont get cold.  as for fruit just try different fruits she or he will eat what they like. Just cut it up. Oh and if the ceiling fan is on at night u might just want 2 cover the cage and all is good.  good luck

  4. l'm not a finch owner but l own budgies.

l would suggest for you to check out this forum out

  5. I am also a first time bird owner (I have a Parakeet though).  Before I adopted mine, I researched on the internet, googled parakeet care and asked a question on here, and also bought a book.

I don't know about finches, but I would google all your questions.  You'd be surprised how much information you can find out.

I'm also glad you stepped up and took on the responsibility of a pet in need.  You just have to educate yourself.  Good Luck and Congratulations on your new family member!

  6. I have zebra finches and i put a sheet over them when the fans on works well.In most cases males are the ones who sing.i googled there diet it saids u can give them beetles, termites, flies and spiders, spinach, romaine lettuce, carrot tops, radish leaves, turnip greens and sprouted millet sprays, pples, oranges, corn on the cob (raw), broccoli, carrots (chopped), sweet potatoes (cooked) and cucumber. Reed the info on the sight listed in my sorces she gives alot on imformation on ther diet and helpful hints

  7. they can have many different fruits, just don't give them the pits or seeds of fruits.  Ceiling fans aren't too bad as long as the bird isn't in the direct way of the air.  Also, make sure it doesn't get too cold in the house, I'm not positive of the temperature, so I would look it up.

  8. I raise goulds and I have the ceiling fan on all the time.  No problem.  As mentioned before, watch out that it is not too drafty.

Goulds can eat any fruit and vegetable.  Here is a link to a list of what you can and can't feed http://www.finchinfo.com/diet/safe_toxic...

But don't be surprise if your gould doesn't eat it.  A lot of goulds are pretty picky when it comes to new foods.

Determining the s*x is pretty easy if you have a normal green back.  If it is a rarer mutation, then it gets harder.  Here is another link to help you determine it s*x.

    I hope the info helps.
