  1. Yes, you can - I'm in your situation and get it done here in California.

It takes a while when you do it the regular way as they have to send everything to Germany and the permanent passport is issued there, then mailed back to the US... but they offer an "express" service for emergencies where a temporary passport can be issued if you have to travel now. MAKE SURE YOU ARE NO LONGER LISTED AS A RESIDENT AT YOUR LOCAL GEMEINDEBUERO IN GERMANY. Otherwise they cannot get the passport done. Good luck. =)

    Details here:  http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/mi...

  2. Send all the requested forms to one of the 9 embassies in your respective area: http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/mi...

In addition to the required forms incl a current utility bill showing your address for proof of residency:

  3. You might want to call your local embassy to see if they can help.  : )

  4. The embassy of Germany. If you don't live in the capital, you need to look for a consul in the nearest city.

  5. Ask at the German ambassy or consulate. They'll set you up.

  6. It will depend on where your official residence is (with the German government, not the US gov't).  If you are still registered in your hometown, or as living abroad.

The German Embassy and Consulate have a nice website, available in both English and German, which explains how to go about getting all the different types of documents you might need, including passports.

I had to get my son's first German passport through the Auslandesamt (as we live in US).

  7. My brother lives in New York also with a Green card and I'm fairly positive that he renewed his passport in the German embassy in New York - was really easy...
