  1. The areas that would be a good minor with history are Anthropology, Political Science, Asian Studies, Art History, Historical Preservation and about anything else. History is really the only area in which every other area plays a relevant part. There are people who are historians in Economics, business, Science, Engineering, the list is endless. So I would pick something you enjoy. If you want the easiest and the one most often used it would be political science or anthropology.

  2. Art?  Anthropology?

  3. International Studies? Thats what i'm taking along with my history major.

  4. A substantive major/minor that would augment history would be good--international relations, a language that goes with the history (esp European or Asian), journalism if you like it, even business if you want to work for museum organizations or the like (marketing or management would be good).

  5. I majored in history in college and had minors in Anthropology, Afro-American Studies*, and Journalism. I also took a lot of English Lit.

Anthropology makes a good mix with History because of the different approach. It also includes material from Archaeology, which is a natural for physical information on history.

    * Well, it was called Afro-American in 1973

  6. How about Classical Civilizations? Or Communication Theory?  English?

  7. Most history is based on one form or another of sociology. So why not major in sociology. Sociological events and ideologies are the cause of our history.

  8. 1. Language (must, must, must)

    2. Economics or geography

    3. Something completely different (biology, mechanics, math,

Economics is always useful, specially if you decide to branch out of history at one point. It is also very useful to understand significant events in history (the 1929 crisis for instance, or the end of slavery or basically whatever else).

Geography is a bit like economics although less difficult math-wise, you'll acquire methodologies and knowledge useful in history and elsewhere.

A language is always useful in life specially if you are interested in some special area or period. And it is not always obvious either, so for instance forget about ancient Egypt if you don't speak German. French would be useful for the post Roman Empire Europe, etc. Of course for Japan studies, Japanese is a must.

And then you have the totally different kind of stuff. Take ethology (studying animal societies) or biology, it may seem odd but it will give you great ideas for history. Subjects like population genetics are intimately linked to history. Psychology is another option.

I wouldn't advise you to go for journalism, anthropology, ethnology, etc because it is too close from history and it won't actually bring you much things new. Think of it as almost like an incest.

  9. I'd go English. Its good to have under your belt because then employers at least believe that you can read and write, haha.

  10. Political science.

  11. It all depends on what you want to do with your degree. If you are interested in using your skills in History then you may want a minor in Secondary education, High School. At least you could teach and still work on a Masters in History. If you wish to teach College, the minimum you need is at least a MA, that would get you in some Community colleges. As a whole a History degree ranks with a bachelor degree in Psychology. Good enough to make you an Assistant Manager at the local Mc Donalds. Which is not necessarily a bad thing but.......

       Hope that helps.
