I'm a horrible owner...have you ever?

Question

Have you ever thought you had more dog food that you really had? I forgot that I only bought a 20 lb bag last time. I usually buy a 40 lb bag. I ran out Saturday evening. The vet isn't open today to buy more food. If you ever found yourself in this situation, what would you do?

I feed Canidae. I have a 100 lb Lab and a 9.5 (yeah, she's gained 1.5 pounds!) Yorkie mix.

I fed them both some small breed adult Blue Buffalo dog food that I had in the pantry.

Unless you have specific food that is prescribed by your vet, try to find the same brand at your local grocery store.

I've never had that situation. I always keep extra food on-hand (I have dry kibble, I have a few cans of canned food, and I have some frozen pre-made raw in the freezer).

Since my dog gets a variety of food anyway, I'd just go to the grocery store and get a piece of chicken and a chicken liver from the meat counter.

oops  yes what a coincidence,,i ran out of my dogs food this morning,,just TWO cups was left in the bag after breakfast,  and like you  I can only buy it in the vets,and  they are not open till tomorrow morning,,,,



  So  for dinner for both my dogs,,i put  minced Turkey,,Carrots,,Peas,,Diced Potatoe,,in a saucepan with some chicken soup like a Turkey stew,,and each got a huge bowl,,topped with their remaining food,,,

It was really a case of going through fridge,,,and will be running to vet tomorrow....no your not a bad owner,,,but i can understand feeling that way...its how i felt when i went to their food bag,,,

I would...

1. Go to Walmart and get Maximum Nutrition. (It has no by-products, coloring, and no other gross stuff. Hey! it's better then purina!)

Hmmm... Or maybe feed Chicken,Rice,and veggies!

I did it! I ended up finding a small weird health food grocery that sells Canidae in my neighborhood. It's my go to in a pinch place now :)

I haven't yet.  But if I did I would just go to the shops and buy whatever food they have.  Or cook up some fish and rice. or chicken.  No big deal.

no it hasnt happened to me yet, i keep their dog food in a clear container in my kitchen so i see when it starts to get a little low i go and buy more.LOL 100 lbs, im taking it this is probably the first time thats happened doesnt sound like hes missed a meal yet.

to the person that said go to the grocery store, thats a bad idea, thats the worst food you can get for a dog.

Aww don't bet yourself up over this.  Everyone makes mistakes. We all do.  No be nice to yourself, it sounds like you have been super nice to your friends.  Feed them what you can tonight and go in the morning and get their special foods.

I'd just nip to the shop and get whatever they have in to put them on until I could get them their normal food.

stop worrying! my dogs get one day a week without food on the reccomendation of both my vet and a dog trainer it gives their stomach a chance to clear itself out properly but if you really dont want to then the previous suggestions of chicken and rice is good they will love you for it also it sounds as though they are both a bit overweight anyway

I had the dog food run low before.  The shop I buy from is only open certain hours tho, and because of the hours I worked, it just wasnt convienient to get a bag until my next day off.

I compromised with a few cans of garbage food from wal-mart to make due until I could get to the pet food shop the next day.  I figured, its no worse than me having McDonald's for supper one day.  I bought a few cans that appeared to be the least evil.

The other option was to cook a meal of chicken and rice for my dog.

Mistakes happen...you're not a bad owner.  That happened once with our cat; it was late at night when we realized we didn't have anymore food for her, so we fed her one of her favorite treats for that night - Ritz Crackers (and we also gave her some of her special kitty kibbles).

I don't believe that's ever happened with our dog(s), though.  We don't get any special food from our vet for our dog, so we would just go to the store and buy some more.  However, if we did have a special food that we got from thet vet, and if the vet wasn't open, then I might just run out to the store and get some type of food to feed them until we could get their usual food.  Or, if we didn't wish to or couldn't go to the store, then we would probably just cook some beef (or beef and rice, which our dog loves) for her.  For a day or so you could just do something like that for your dog - if you have any extra chicken or beef, just cook some up for them and divy it up so that it lasts for a day or so.

Once again, you're not a bad owner.  It's not like you purposely ran out of food to feed your dogs, and there are ways of still feeding your dogs.  Giving them some human food (such as beef or chicken) for a day isn't bad, as long as you make sure you don't feed them any of the human foods that are toxic to them, as I'm sure you know.

I've run out of dog food, I've come home too late to feed my dog, I've forgotten to feed my dog, but I've never felt bad about my dog missing a meal.  In fact, I wish I would fast my dog more often.  My dog is very well fed, but sometimes she misses a meal.  So don't feel bad.  Sounds like both of your dogs are overweight anyway.  They could probably use a fasting day every week anyway.

Ive done that before..but worse

I went to the pet store just for dog food and came back with toys...forgetting the food

but I fed them some boiled chicken, some veggies and rice..  I didn't want to feed straight raw...then the next day I went back to get the food!!

You say you feed them Canidae so then go to Canidae's website and look for a store that sells the dog food in your area. They have a store finder thing that tells you where canidae is sold.

Aww.. no... but I'd buy whatever I could just to tide me over until I could get what I needed to.  It's not gonna hurt for a day or two.   You aren't a horrible owner at all and you know it!!!!

Don't feel too bad we've all been in your shoes. Don't be tempted to feed them random human food though that will wreak havoc on their intestines. Try a few scrambled eggs. Nothing fancy just the eggs.

Yes, and then discovered the online stockist was out of stock. I had to change JJ's kibble to another brand. He was given meat from the freezer until I could get to the pet supermarket.

I'm sure JJ would think I was horrible if he knew I was responsible for his upset stomach, but he did get his revenge with a bad case of gas!
