They are. Teams put in second string guys to see how could they are. Most teams also put in rookies to see if the trade was worth it. Teams don't want the starting players who are usually the best of the team to get injured.

If you're such a huge fan, you would know if they were traded.  And you would also know the pre-season is used to determine what new guys to keep or possibly start.

Of Course!! In the preseason, you try to limit the exposure of your starters to decrease their likelyhood of injury.

They are there, they're just not playing so that they won't get hurt. It's only pre-season
