  2. Being an oarsman I didn't often get to steer the boat (except through effort), but it is much harder than it sounds. If you are in a bow coxed shell it will be easier to see where you are going, but in a traditional stern coxed boat you will be trying to see "through" the rowers during the catch.

You'll have to know (study) the course to know the obstacles ahead of time and will have to plan way ahead of any turns you expect to make. You will make lots of little corrections while the oars are in the water. But making big changes while they are out will throw off the balance.

There is also a lot more to coxing than "steering the boat".

    Good luck!

  3. heh, heh, heh, you'll find out quite soon enough.

  4. Well, if the strength of your crew is unevenly distributed between port and starboard, then your boat will constantly steer toward the lane next to you.

If you're steering a boat with a crappy fin, or just a crappy boat in general, the chances are you will steer off course.

I found that steering an eight was the hardest just because I could never see past the bow of the boat.

It's really not that difficult. Once you' completed a few run throughs you'll be fine. And even though you're a beginner, don't let the rowers take over your calls. You're the coxie and you're in charge.
