I'm a seventeen year old that wants to be homeschooled?

I'm a seventeen year old that wants to be home schooled. My mom can't home school me because she lives in Spain and my dad is never around. I live with my grandma and she can't home school me because of her condition.

I was wondering if there is anything online I could take or if I could meet with teachers/tutors somewhere or have them come to my house.

Also, I don't know how I would let my school know that I want to do this. Who should I talk to in my school about this?

Thanks, Cass

  1. why bother?  you have less than a year left of high school.  just get it over with.

  2. There are no public online options in Rhode Island.  You'd have to homeschool with a private online school (very pricey) or find a self-teaching curriculum to use.  Most high school courses are self-directed with someone acting as a mentor over you.

You wouldn't be able to qualify for "home bound" education.  Typically it's for students with medical, or behavioral needs.  You could talk to the school counselor about getting home bound for emotional issues.  Homebound is when a teacher/tutor from the local school comes to your home (or hospital) and works with you once or more per week.

    Private tutors are very expensive.

Most private online high schools start at $350/course/semester/0.5 credit and go up in price from there.

  3. You can contact the board of education in your area.

  4. I'm sure rules and regulations vary from state to state, but where I live, I don't think you could make those sorts of decisions for yourself unless you're 18.  You'd need to have some sort of parental/guardian approval.

If you're looking to go to college, I honestly don't know how it would look if you're trying to home school though online classes.  It seems as if college is getting more and more competitive and I don't know if they'd consider online HS classes valid.

If I were you, I'd just grind it out and go to school everyday.  Do the best you can, move onward and upward!

  5. Hi,

There are many different homeschools online and just regular homeschools where you can buy the books and have them shipped to you, and even some private schools have homeschooling options; which is what I did this past year.  I wasn't too happy about it because I missed my friends and it was REALLY hard and it was required that I do at least two extra activities as extra curriculum.  Guess what - I live with my Grandma too (and Dad).

Since you're 17 homeschooling would probably be a lot more easier for you than it was for me!

I live in Oklahoma and now they have free virtual highschools.  Your state might have one that you can do for free on your own time.

I understand that you're going through a lot and homeschooling MAY be the best for you, but before you consider being homeschooled this next year, think about only one more year (one more year of bs) and think if you could bare it because I will *PROMISE* you, homeschooling isn't easy and it's not fun and after a while you'll get to the point where you don't even want to learn... but that's just my little words of wisdom.

Maybe you could consider going to a different highschool.  I searched Rhode Island Homschools on google and here's something I came up with:  http://www.homeschoolinginrhodeisland.co...

Hope that helps, and you sound like a very intelligent lady and keep doing what you're doing and don't drop out of school because you have so much potential and, if you can, please try to hang in there.  I promise you will do great.  :)

    God bless

  6. there are many homeschools online.  But the best to do is to talk to a counselor at school and see if they know anything.  Or go to a school supply store and they may have ideas. there may be some that are sponsered by the state, that will give you all the materials and computer to use, but you have to return it all as you are done with it.  We have this in our state, but I dont know what state you are in, so you would have to check around.

  7. Homeschooling would be a great option for you! Go for it!!

  8. I would recommend contacting one or both of the associations listed on this page or anyo of the support groups http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/regi... and ask them how it works for homeschooling, if you need to notify the school, and diplomas in Rhode Island.

There is no free online program where you live, but you may be able to do your own thing with purchased resources and your grandmother may be able to issue you a diploma, or your grandmother may be able to pay for you to sign up with a school like Keystone National High School or something else. And you don't talk to anybody at your school, unless your school happens to have an independent study program you could do.
